Worland- The Worland Warriors pulled off an upset Friday January 23rd when they took home the win against Cody 54-41.
Sophomore Kobe Bradshaw played a significant role in the game with his senior teammates. Senior Grant Page had several blocks under the basket. The Warriors had a strong second quarter, then the lead fell to within 5 at one point. However, the Warriors were able to scrape out a good fourth quarter and take home the win.
When asked how the Warriors kept the lead and secured the win, Bradshaw said, “We fed it to our posts a lot and made a lot of our outside shots.” Looking forward to the next game, Bradshaw says the team is focussing on not making turnovers and making layups.
Head Coach Tanner Hart commented on the Cody game: “I felt like our guys played a more complete basketball game against Cody. We had great moments of good shot selection and were able to get some inside baskets. Grant and Cooper really spearheaded the charge in that game for us. I felt like our only real negative was our turnovers, allowing Cody more possessions.”
The boys secured another win against Lander February 2 at home and lost to Pinedale the following day. In the Lander game, the boys came out ready to play in the first quarter but quickly saw that turn into the second quarter, being outscored 25-8. The team responded to the challenge in the second half and played much better team basketball.
“Mike Williams had a terrific all-around game for us and we were able to get some big buckets from Bolen Barthelmess to get us going,” Hart said about the Cody game. “Grant was a force on the boards and we were able to finish the game with a solid win against a good team.”
Hart described the team as “a bit Jekyll and Hyde all year,” which showed in the next game against Pinedale, unfortunately.
“We came out slow but had a slim lead in the 1st quarter with 55 seconds to go,” Hart said. “We quickly gave up 5 points and ended up going into the second quarter down. In the second half, we got within 2 points quickly and then just couldn't get over the hump and get stops and score.”
Page, a senior, had another strong game with 11 points and 14 rebounds, and senior Taylor Ruckman played consistently inside the paint, noted Hart.
“We just didn't shoot the ball particularly well, and that really hurt us in the long run,” Hart explained.
The team is set to face Lovell and Powell this week.

Worland – The freshman Warriors played Lovell at Worland High School within the past week with a setback score of 63-45.
The Warriors led in the first quarter, keeping a steady score, but faced challenges after the second quarter. Despite the turnover, the Warriors continued to push to get back on track and hustled to transition to defense.
WHS freshman Braylon Kidgell said, “We might not have won, but we were able to keep our attitudes in check and keep our heads held high even with a loss.”
Later in the week, they claimed victory against the Riverside Rebels at home.
On Monday, the team had a close game with Cody but fell short 44-39. The Warriors gave their all in the game to push against Cody’s defense.
WHS freshman Aiden Pomeroy noted that despite the loss, the team is headed in the right direction. “We definitely do well on teamwork and communicating,” Pomeroy said.
Freshman Warriors head to Buffalo on January 31st and will verse Pinedale on February 7th.

Worland- The Worland Warriors Boys Basketball team faced the Powell Panthers on Friday, January 23.
The first half was a close contest, with both Worland and Powell matching each other’s intensity. Powell leaned on their three-point shooting, while Worland found success through smart passing. By half time, the teams were tied, and the battle for the win was fierce. The energy in the gym soared as both teams traded baskets. Worland adjusted their rebounding strategy and looked to sink some three-pointers of their own. The third quarter saw Powell pull ahead, but the crowd’s enthusiasm never wavered.
“Our Powell game was a bit up and down due to a frustrating start by our team on defense. We had a hard time finding our men on backdoor cuts, and then Powell began hitting three pointers, “ reflected WHS Varsity Coach Tanner Hart. “The crowd and environment were awesome on Prevention Night, and I was hoping our guys could recover and find some energy somewhere."
The Warriors came out strong in the third quarter, adding crucial points to the scoreboard. "If we would have played average in the firt half, we would have beat Powell by double digits," noted Worland Warrior Kobe Bradshaw.
Hart highlighted the turning point, saying, “In the third quarter, Kobe Bradshaw, Elias Mitchell, and Gunner Mascaro helped us capture that energy and make a great push as we worked to catch up. We went from being down 19 to within 5 points. Unfortunately, we dug ourselves too deep a hole and couldn't recover.”
Hart said seniors Elias Mitchell and Taylor Ruckman both scored in the double digits, with Mitchell having a terrific offensive game and Ruckman was putting up a solid performance around the rim.
“I am hoping to see our team learn and grow from our turnovers and poor defensive effort and build on the positive moments we saw in the game,” Hart said.
With just a few minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Worland pushed hard to regain the lead as the crowd’s excitement reached its peak. Ultimately, Powell secured the win, 67 to 56. The matchup showcased the determination and grit of both high school teams. In the end, Worland’s Elias Mitchell led the way with 16 points and 8 rebounds.
