  • What? Based on feedback from residents about ways we could better support their outpatient learning, we are introducing a pilot of a 15 minute clinic-based teaching sessions called FAM Jam (Focus on Ambulatory Medicine).

  • When? Every Friday afternoon from 1:15-1:30 starting in January (residents will not start clinic until 1:30 or later).

  • Who? Staffing faculty and all residents scheduled for clinic that afternoon. Other faculty are welcome to attend, too!

  • Why? The purpose of FAM Jam is to address outpatient curricular areas that have been identified as needs by current residents and on previous postgraduate surveys:

      1. Gynecology

      2. Dermatology

      3. Ophthalmology

      4. Nutrition

      5. Upper Respiratory Infections

  • How?

    • Faculty Responsibilities:

      • The faculty staffer(s) will facilitate the 15-minute session. Residents should bring cases or questions to discuss related to the monthly focus topic. The faculty should also have a case or topic to discuss as a back-up. Each month will have a suggested theme (dermatology, gynecology, etc) listed on Madlines, but cases may deviate from the theme if needed. Suggested resources can be found on the Curriculum Resource Site: https://sites.google.com/wisc.edu/curriculum-resource-site/required-outpatient-rotations?authuser=0

      • The staffer should review the session’s schedule with an eye toward picking out cases that might be good for discussion. Examples include noticing that a newborn is on the schedule and taking that as an opportunity to discuss infant nutrition or seeing that a patient is coming in for follow up of a rash and using that as a jumping-off point to discuss evaluation of rashes. Other than perhaps reviewing the curriculum resource site for useful resources to share, the staffer is not expected to do special preparation for these sessions.

      • The learning goal is NOT intended to be comprehensive, rather focused on the immediate evaluation and management of THIS clinic patient

        • A quick review of the history/any triage notes may suggest a potential diagnosis, a review of typical history elements, exam findings, studies (if needed) and management

        • Example: 30-year-old female with "pink eye" noted to have a history of allergic rhinitis. Discuss the typical complaints of allergic conjunctivitis, distinguishing from bacterial or viral process, pertinent negative review of systems, typical exam findings and first line therapies.

      • At the end of each FAM Jam session, the faculty should fill out the quick 1-minute Check-Out survey, so we can see how things are going. The link will be posted on Madlines weekly.

    • Resident Responsibilities:

      • Residents are encouraged to bring cases or questions to discuss at FAM Jam learning sessions. These cases can be related to the topic theme of the month, a patient case recently on the resident's schedule, or any other cases/questions that would be beneficial for group discussion and learning.
