Step 1: Lesson Standards & Learning Goals
In this standard, students are expected to pose a question, collect data, analyze data (including representing data in a graph), and interpreting data. Students should be posing questions that yield categorical data with up to four categories (e.g., eye color, favorite dinner food, age, number of pets at home, etc.). Students are expected to interpret data in a graph to answer questions such as: the total number of responses, which category had the most/least responses, and differences/ similarities between the four categories. Students solve problems using the data in a graph. The range of numbers for these one-step problems is within 100 since it intersects standard NC.2.OA.1.

Display a picture graph on the board that represents data relevant to the students, such as favorite foods or pets. Have students study the graph, pointing out different elements and discussing what they observe with their small groups.

Data Sorting Game: Give each student a set of cards with different categories (e.g., colors, animals, fruits) and ask them to sort the cards into groups. Then, facilitate a class discussion about the different ways students sorted their cards and introduce the idea of organizing data into categories.
