NC.NBT.6
Add up to three two-digit numbers using strategies based on place value and properties of operations [within 100]
Add up to three two-digit numbers using strategies based on place value and properties of operations [within 100]
Step 1: Lesson Standards & Learning Goals
This standard provides an opportunity for students to apply the commutative property and place value strategies (see table in 2.NBT.5) to find the sum of three 2-digit numbers. The commutative property of addition states that when the order of the addends is changed, the sum stays the same. Students are expected to explain why strategies work as they apply place value strategies by decomposing a two-digit number into tens and ones and then add the decomposed numbers. Students may use drawings or objects to support their explanation. *The US standard algorithm should not be taught until Grade 4. Students who have independently demonstrated proficiency with the strategies mentioned here should spend time working on adding and subtracting with expanded form which is the expectation in third grade.

Use multiple strategies, including concrete objects, drawings, and decomposing, to add up to three 2-digit numbers.
Apply place value strategies and the commutative property of addition to solve addition problems.
Add up to three 2-digit numbers using strategies based on place value and properties of operations.
Explain why a chosen strategy works for solving addition problems.
There are multiple strategies that can be used to solve addition problems with three 2-digit numbers.
Sometimes numbers may need to be composed or decomposed in the process of adding.
When adding numbers, the place and value of the digits is important for determining the sum.
