NC.2.MD.2
Measure the length of an object twice, using length units of different lengths for the two measurements; describe how the two measurements relate to the size of the unit chosen.
Measure the length of an object twice, using length units of different lengths for the two measurements; describe how the two measurements relate to the size of the unit chosen.
Step 1: Lesson Standards & Learning Goals
How do we use different measurement units to compare the lengths of the same object?
How can the length of two objects be compared?
Explain how one object can have different measurements based on the size of the unit.
Why is there a greater number of smaller units than large units?
centimeter (cm)
meter (m)
yard (yd)
foot (ft)
inch (in)
Measure one object using two units of different lengths.
Measure the length of an object twice, using length units of different lengths for the two measurements; describe how the two measurements relate to the size of the unit chosen.
Explain that one object can have different measurements based on the size of the unit.
Explain that measuring the dimension of an object with a smaller unit will have a larger number associated with the measurement compared to measuring the same object with a larger unit.
Measuring an object using different units of measure does not change the length of the object.
Measurement is the process of comparing a unit to the object being measured.

Measurement Scavenger Hunt:
Provide students with a list of items to measure around the classroom using different measurement tools. Working with a partner or in small groups, have measure object and record their findings. Engage students in discourse to share.
Measurement Stations:
Set up measurement stations around the classroom with different objects for students to measure using rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and tape measures. Provide guidance on measuring an object using two different tools. Explain to students how to record their data for sharing.
