ATHLETICS

This is the information in regard to athletic opportunities at WEGC and we ask you to register your interest.   By signing up for this sport you are not committing to all of the events. All it will mean is that you would like to go onto the email list so reminders are sent to you closer to each event.  WEGC have an athletic team that competes at the College Sport Regional Athletics Championships. This meet is for serious athletes who have a personal best for their favored events.  In Term 1 the PE/Sport department will be running lunchtime and afterschool athletic training sessions which will be open to anyone keen on representing WEGC in athletics.  

COMPETITION DATES:

  • Thu 26th March           College Sport Regional Champs - Newtown Park    
  • Sat 6th - Sat 7th Apr    North Island Athletic Champs - Palmerston North        
  • Fri 6th - Sun 8th Dec   NZSS National Athletic Champs - Timaru

UNIFORM:

WEGC House/Sport carnival - students dress up in their house colours but wear athletic gear.  When representing WEGC at Regionals the students will wear a WEGC vest/ PE top and own athletic shorts. 
COST:Entry fee applies for Regionals, North Island Secondary Schools and NZ Secondary Schools. 
COACHING:This sport is self coached.  Most competitive students are affiliated with local running clubs.  The college is able to recommend local clubs if required.   
ATHLETIC OPPORTUNITIES:The WEGC House Sport carnival is a combination of sport and fun inter-house activities.  Students wanting to be considered for selection to represent WEGC at Regionals please complete the EXPRESSION OF INTEREST 2024 to let us know your favoured events and your PB's for the season.  Regionals is a competitive athletic meet.   The Wellington Secondary Schools athletic team is selected from the regional results to compete at the North Island Athletic Championships.  WEGC historically has about 10 girls each year who are selected for this.  WEGC does not organise this travel/accommodation, it is the responsibility of the individual athlete.
