WEGC Netball Information 2025
Coaches will be getting in touch once trials are complete and teams selected. If your daughter does not hear from her coach, please let us know by emailing netball@wegc.school.nz.
Competition
Teams play on Saturdays either at the indoor venue at Kilbirnie’s Akau Tangi Sports Centre or outdoors at the Hataitai netball courts. The time of day and venue depends on the grade in which the team is placed. School teams play in Collegiate grades against other school teams except our top four teams play in the Women’s Premier Competition. The number of teams in each grade is dictated by Netball Wellington.
Premier and Collegiate competition commences late April/early May and goes through until the end of August.
● Premier Grades have 60 minute games split into 15 min quarters with 3, 5, 3 min breaks.
● Collegiate Grades have 40 minute games split into 10 min quarters with 1 min breaks
The weekly draw and team results can be found on the Netball Wellington website www.netballwellington.co.nz
Draws can often change at late notice so be sure to check – team management should also be sharing this information with their team.

Saturdays
The courts can be a very busy, hectic place. Please make sure your daughter arrives with plenty of time to spare so that she doesn’t hold up her team. Standard netball rules apply for all students (nails must be cut, hair tied up and out of the face, covered sports shoes must be worn with white socks only and all jewellery and watches off, including earrings.) Please make sure your daughter takes a drink bottle to every game to keep hydrated.
Parking beside Hataitai courts is limited but there are plenty of parks above the courts - just turn left at the roundabout by the practice courts and fence. There is a footpath from the upper car park down to the courts.
Coaching
Parents/Caregivers
We are always in need of coaches and managers. Please indicate your interest on your daughter’s registration form or email the Sports Office directly on sport@wgc.school.nz.
Coaching support is provided before and during the season. Netball Wellington runs excellent coaching courses. See details on their website http://netballwellington.co.nz and register early.
Senior students who wish to coach should register their interest by completing the Coaching section on the Sports Registration form. There will be a few sessions held at school for senior students wanting to coach. Student coaches will be expected to help at the Junior tournament on Saturday 23 March.
Uniform
The WEGC uniform consists of the PE top that students wear in PE classes and a navy netball skirt (on loan from the sport department)
Dresses are provided to the Senior A , B, C and Junior A, B teams .
Social teams are provided with a uniform on loan from the sports department.
A WEGC sports hoodie can be purchased from NZ Uniforms.
Umpiring
Premier Teams are expected to umpire on a team roster. Training will be given during junior trials, so seniors please make sure you are available.
All Collegiate teams are required to supply an umpire for their own games. The netball convenor will get in touch with all managers before the season begins with more information about this, including a list of available student WEGC umpires.
Trainings
Trainings for teams are before school, lunchtime or after school and the day/time is subject to coach availability. All players are expected to attend trainings once a week and we ask for the support of all parents in this regard – training is not optional unless girls play in a Social Competitive team. If your daughter’s team is consistently not training you need to contact the netball convenor and make them aware of this so that it can be sorted out with the coach.
Social Competitive Teams
Social Competitive teams play in the same competition and grades as other teams so it is not “social netball” as such. All Year 9/10's must trial and they will then be placed in a team. Year 11 – 13 students can make up their own team of 10 players (no less) in consultation with the Sports Office. Each team must have a parent manager who will attend all games. It is the responsibility of these teams to find their own coach (if they want one) and umpire.
