The Award recipient for the Sportswoman Cup for Excellence in Sport goes to Greer Thornton - New Zealand Hockey, Future Black Stick
Greer has played over 100 games for the WEGC 1st XI hockey team, making her debut as the only Year 9 in 2021. In 2025 Greer who was a multi talented athlete made the decision to focus on hockey to see where this journey could take her and it has certainly paid off.
Greer was selected into
The Hockey Experience U18 South Island team (playing against the North Island, Mavericks and Queensland)
Was a member of the Wellington Women's U18 team – which placed 4th in the country and was awarded the Most Valuable Player for the Wellington team
Is a member of the U18 Regional High Performance programme and is currently training with the NHC women’s tier 1 team.
To top off her fantastic year of hard work on and off the hockey turf, Greer was rewarded with selection to the Future Black Stick squad. Players were selected from across New Zealand for this squad. This is an outstanding achievement as Greer has now been recognised as a future black stick
