ROWING

By signing up for this sport you are not committing to Rowing.  All it will mean is that you would like to go onto a mailing list so when the rowing season starts mid way through 2024 you will be sent information. 

DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITY:

Rowing is for girls who want to be really fit and who like the idea of attending several training sessions each week. Rowing is a lot of fun. You will make great friends and learn a lot about organising yourself, committing to a team, training and racing.   The summer season runs from the start of Term 4 until the end of Term 1 the following year.  WEGC in conjunction with Star Rowing Club offer a Learn to Row Programme.  This is a 5/6 week taster of rowing and is compulsory if you want to be considered to row for WEGC in the 2024/2025 season.  This programme will begin in August 2024.  This will be advertised  on the sports notice board, TV screens and facebook in Term 2/3.  

COMPETITION DATES:

Learn to Row, 5/6 week programme starting in August 2024.  Rowing for East in the 2024/2025 season will start in September 2024.

TRAININGS:

Summer training usually consists of 4 to 5 sessions a week.  These sessions are 2 hours long and involve rowing on the harbour or doing fitness training in the Boat Club. They are generally held from 6am to 8am or 4pm to 6pm.  If you row as a senior, training is generally 5 to 6 days a week.  In the lead up to major competitions such as NZ Secondary Schools (Maadi Cup), students can be training every day. There is a one week training camp held every year during the summer holidays.  Sessions are worked around the school day, no rower should be late to school or need to leave school early to attend rowing session

COACHING and the PROGRAMME:

The coaching is provided by Star Boating Club and the programme involves:

If selected to row for WEGC in the 2024/2025 season parents will be invited to an information session that will explain WEGC rowing and you will become part of a group of WEGC rowing parents who will help to organise uniforms, transport, accommodation, and food for trips away to training camps and regattas.    

COMPETITION TERMS:

Terms 4 2024 and Term 1 2025, During the first half of the season, the rowing competitions are inter club events with rowers competing for Star Boating Club.  Regattas are generally held on Wellington Harbour, Lake Horowhenua, the Manawatu River, the Whanganui River or Lake Karapiro (Cambridge).

LOCATION OF EVENTS:

Daily trainings are at Star Boating Club - Wellington Harbour.  During the season, rowers may compete in inter school regattas for Wellington East Girls’ College. Inter school champs are held in Wellington, Lake Karapiro (Cambridge) or Lake Ruataniwha (Twizel) and training camps are held in Wanganui

EXPECTED TIMES:

6.00 - 8.00am morning sessions before school or4.00 - 6.00pm afternoon sessions

UNIFORM:

Star Boating Club uniform for club events.     WEGC Uniform for inter school events, this includes the WEGC Rowing suit, muscle back tee shirt and visor. 

COST:

Rowing incurs considerable costs.  Fees for the year cover use of facilities at the Star Boat Club, race fees, transport, accommodation and food for training camp and regattas.  

Fees are around $4000 in any one year.  Extra costs are uniforms and gear like thermals and shorts for training.
