Sideline Behaviour Expectations
Encourage, Don’t Criticise – Cheer positively and focus on effort, teamwork, and improvement rather than mistakes or outcomes.
Respect Coaches and Officials – Avoid questioning or criticising decisions made by coaches or umpires/referees and teach players to respect authority figures in the game. Any issues please contact the sports office – sport@wegc.school.nz, before approaching coaches with concerns.
Model Sportsmanship – Applaud good play from all teams and players, regardless of the scoreboard. Set an example of fair and gracious behaviour.
Focus on Fun and Learning – Remind yourself that youth sports are about development, enjoyment, and fostering a love for the game, not just winning.
Support Without Overstepping – Allow coaches to coach and players to play; avoid giving instructions from the sidelines, or advice on the car ride home, that could confuse or overwhelm your student.
These behaviours help create a positive environment that benefits all players and ensures everyone can enjoy the experience.
