Megan Armstrong Bryant, Douglas Martini, Justin Mauney
Megan "Megs" Armstrong Bryant (Class of 2001): In her four years at CHS, she participated in 3 sports: Cross country, Swimming, and Soccer. In cross country, she was a member of the State Championship team in 1997.
In four years at Cary, Armstrong dominated the 50 and 100-meter freestyle events, using her power and speed to go undefeated in Tri-Conference competition (112 wins). Armstrong earned four Tri-Eight Summer of the Year awards, was a four-time Most Valuable Swimmer for the Imps and was a three-time All-Region selection.
Megan was a four-year starter in soccer. She was named team captain and team MVP 1999, 2000, and 2001. While at Cary, she lettered, was a varsity starter, was All Conference, and Academic All Conference for all four years. She was All Region Second Team in 1998 and All Region First Team from 1999-2001. She was All State in 2000 and 2001 and was selected to play in the East-West All Star Game in 2001 and as CHS Female Athlete of the Year in 2001.
Armstrong's best perspective in life may have come from the athletic field: "For the longest time, (athletics) was how I defined myself," she said. "It made me step back and look at myself and realize that's not who I am. Nothing so unsustainable can define you. You have to find the things that last, like character."
Justin Mauney (Class of 2000): As an athlete, Justin played on the NC State Championship soccer team, frequently as a starter. He was a member of the 1998 4A State Championship team and in 1999 he was 2nd team All Conference and a Pepsi Scholar Athlete.
His efforts as a point guard in basketball contributed to one of the most successful four years of basketball in recent history. He was a 1999 All Conference Honorable Mention and in 2000 was a member of the All Conference First Team.
As a member of the track team, Justin's 4 x 8 1998 relay team placed fourth in states and set school records. His leadership on these teams was also commendable as he served as a captain of all three teams during his senior year.
He received numerous awards his senior year. The included: N&O Scholar Athlete of the Year, NCHSAA Scholar Athlete of the year, NCHSAA Heart of a Champion; US Navy Scholars All American Basketball First team; US Army Scholar All American and Athlete of the Year; CHS White Imp Club of the 50's award, and CHS Sportsmanship award.
Dr. Douglas Martini (Volunteer): Dr. Douglas Martini, who is an Orthopedic Surgeon, has been the team physician for all Cary High School athletes' for 17 years. He has dedicated his spare time in assisting with not only Cary High School athletics, but is currently or has assisted as the team physician for Campbell University, Shaw University. and the Carolina Hurricanes. Dr. Martini has been on the sidelines for many Cary High Football games and other athletic events over the years. He has assisted in injury evaluation, treatment, and performed some surgeries. Dr. Martini has educated and counseled student-athletes, coaches, and parents about injury information so they can make a well educated and informed decision about proper medical care. On many occasions he has given out his personal contact information to parents and met with injured athletes after hours and on the weekend regarding their injuries.
As a doctor, he has shown patience, respect, and personal care to anyone he comes in contact with. Dr. Martini has the highest form of moral integrity and is a well respected surgeon in the medical community.
