Karen Curtis, Wayne Dillard, Lindsay Hodges, Terry Nobles Sr., Jimmie Satterwhite, Irvin Slade
Karen D. Curtis (Class of '93): Karen was a key player and leader on the CHS basketball teams of 1990-1993. In her senior season of basketball at CHS, she helped her team to the state championship. Karen won many awards during her basketball career at Cary High. She was conference player of the year, MVP for Tri-Six conference, MVP for tournament, MVP for regionals and sectionals, and also MVP for the state.
In her senior year, Karen was the 4-A player of the year for Wake Co. She also played in the East-West All Star game and was voted MVP. At CHS she was the All-Sports Female Athlete of the Year. Karen also played and lettered in softball during 1989-1993. In softball she was All-State for 2 years.
After graduation from CHS, Karen attended and graduated from High Point University. She was also a basketball star at High Point where she broke many records. After graduating from High Point, Karen played pro-ball but returned home to watch CHS's basketball games.
Karen wanted to be a part of the program at Cary High so she volunteered during the 1998-99 season. She enjoyed coaching and being a part of CHS again. When the opportunity became available for her to be the head coach for girls varsity, she quickly applied. She was the varsity girls basketball coach for the 1999-2000 season. Karen was a great role model, friend, and motivator for the girls on her team. She looks forward to many years of success at CHS,
Dwight "Wayne" Dillard (Class of '65): Wayne was a coach's dream. In fact, he was a coach on the floor - he ran the offense, scored, set up plays, and controlled the offensive end of the court. He had tremendous speed, was always out front on the fast break and was a terror on defense. He made life miserable for opposing guards.
Wayne had great desire, determination, and dedication. You could always depend on him. He loved the game and he always came to play. He was a great practice player and therefore was always prepared for the game.
Wayne signed with UNC-Chapel Hill and played freshman ball. He is also still in the North Carolina Sports Record book for the number of points in a single game - Wayne scored in the 50's against Selma his senior year.
In addition to basketball, Wayne was also a very good baseball player and was All Conference from 1962-1965.
Lindsay "Big L" Hodges (Class of '66): Lindsay Hodges exemplified athletics at CHS during the 60's. He lettered in football his freshman year. In an article in The Raleigh Times on Saturday, August 28, 1965 previewing the upcoming season, Bob Wills wrote, "Lindsay Hodges, 6-1, 230, is the only returning tackle. He was a defensive specialist last year and reportedly could be the best defensive lineman in the conference."
Lindsay was co-captain of the Imp football team his senior year during the CHS dominance of 2-A football. His senior year marked the fifth straight conference championship for the Imps under Coach Ed Lane. Coach Lane in The Raleigh Times described Lindsay after an Imp victory by saying, "He led us defensively, tackle-wise." Lindsay was All Conference in football his junior and senior year and All East Second Team his senior year.
Beginning his sophomore year, Lindsay was a three-sport letterman in football, wrestling and track. Lindsay was one of the first heavy weights at CHS and won the Wake County Wrestling tournament at NCSU in December 1965. He went on to be named All Conference in wrestling his senior year and was third in the East in the heavy weight division.
In track, Lindsay threw the discus and the shot put which helped to boost the Imps to the conference title. During his senior year, Lindsay was the recipient of the Phillip Sorrell Sportsmanship Award and was named "Mr. Cary High."
Terry Nobles (Volunteer): Terry has volunteered so many hours of his personal time and money to make Cary High School a better place.
His history of leadership is displayed through being: past president of the Cary High Imp Club, active member and on the board of directors in the Cary Jaycees (both state and national levels), and various positions at the Morrisville Baptist Church.
Terry's dedication to CHS has remained as strong today as years ago when his three sons attended and graduated there. He never tires of "doing" for the CHS Imp Club. His involvement in the major fund raiser, the reverse car raffle, each year has out done the previous. In the last five years, the car raffle has produced a profit of over five thousand dollars, largely due to Terry's efforts and motivational skills. His latest feat was to start the fund for a new track at the football field. He pulled $1000.00 cash from his wallet to start the fund and then asked to be named "an anonymous donor." Now there's someone who loves Cary High School!
Jimmie "Sap" Satterwhite, Sr. (Class of '63): Jim was an integral member and a starter on an outstanding basketball team. He was a really good defensive player, strong re-bounder, and a fierce competitor. Much of the success of the 1962-63 team could be directly attributed to Jim. He was named the outstanding player by his teammates.
In football, he was one of the best high school running backs. He would get through the hole very quickly, cut to the outside, and he was gone. He and good size and excellent speed. He was a member of the All Conference Football team and Capital Area Conference team in 1962. He was also co-captain of the football team in 1962, Most outstanding player (football) in 1962 and also Most outstanding player in basketball in 1962.
He lettered all four years in football, basketball, and track.
Jim wrote, "When growing up in Cary, I would go to ball games at Cary High School with my father and when watching the games I could see myself playing on the same field someday. In the years to come I saw my dreams come true.
I give thanks to God for being able to grow up in a community like Cary in those days. For the teachers and coaches that help form our lives and guidance which they gave. For the support of my parents and the support of other parents in the community. The support of the parents in education and athletics was waht Cary High School was all about. To see the stands full of parents and students at ball games whether be at home games or away games they were always there. This support was what helped pull together "the team named desire.""
Irvin "Irv" Slade (Class of '65): Slade lettered in football both in 1963 and 1964. He letter in basketball 1963, 1964, and 1965.
He coached CHS JV basketball from 1972-1979 and then varsity basketball from 1979-1983. Jim served as an assistant coach under head coach Steve Holleman when the 1976 team reached the state playoffs. He later became a teacher at Cary Senior and assumed the duties of head basketball coach. He influenced many young men along the way.
It should be noted that his 1982 varsity team won the News & Observer Holiday tournament at Broughton High School that year over some of the best high school basketball teams in the country.
Coach Slade also served as a Physical Education Pupil Instructor while teaching at Cary Senior. There have been at least 2 students from that class that have gone on to become educators in the state school system and would not have done so if it were not for the inspiration from Coach Slade.
