Debbie Edwards, John Emerson, Richard McGhee, Joice Smith Jones
Debbie Edwards (Coach): Debbie Edwards began her coaching profession at Ravenscroft High School, winning a State Championship in 1986 in basketball. She then came to Cary High School and coached tennis, volleyball and basketball. She had great success in all three sports. She won her second State Championship at Cary High in basketball in 1993. Because of this success, she was then wooed by Leesville High School to serve as their first Women's Basketball Coach and Assistant Athletic Director.
Her Cary High School cumulative basketball record was 136-51. Her team won seven conference titles and seven years while at Cary and six years while at Ravenscroft.
She gave all of herself to her teams and you couldn't help but want to respond. Whether it was through her her words of encouragement, the time she gave up during summers, or the emotion in her pre- and post-game locker room speeches, she demonstrated her care. And, even though she was hard-nosed and at times your biggest critic, you always knew she wanted your best and was forever in your corner.
John Emerson (Volunteer): John Emerson has been a volunteer announcer for the Cary High School baseball games for over twenty-seven years. He is known as the voice of the Imps baseball for all of these years and shows no sign of stopping. John has never received any compensation for his time and efforts.
John would be a given a schedule at the start of the season and he never had to be calledn and reminded. He was always on time ready to go at the beginning of each game.
John also coached baseball in the Cary Junior and Senior baseball leagues.
Joyice Smith Jones (Class of '53): Joyice was a key starter and the main scorer on some well blaanced, very successful women's basketball teams. In fact, she helped lead Cary to the Wake County Conference title, which at that time was as far as the women's teams could go.
Statistics were not kept in the 50;s as they are today, so specific stats are not available. Charlie Adams recalls that in the 40's Peggy Young was Cary's all time leading scorer, broken by Jennie Pegram in the late 40's. Joyice then broke Ms. Pegram's records in the mid 50's.
Joyice was a prolific scorer, a key to a very successful women's program, has gone on to a very successful career and has been an outstanding citizen.
Richard "Maggie" McGhee (Class of '63): Richard was one of the best football players ever to play for Cary. He played four years of varsity football at Cary. He placed multiple positions and was all conference, played in the North-South All Star game, and received a scholarship to Lenoir Rhyne College. He was a starter at Lenior Rhyne on a conference championship team.
In addition to football, Richard also participated in track, basketball and baseball while at Cary.
His coaching career included stints back at Cary in 1968-1969 as JV football coach and Varsity assistant football coach. He was also Varsity Head Coach of Cary's Wrestling team, of which he sent several wrestlers to the state tournament.
