Jerry Dotson, Jerry Horton, David Parson, Jimmy Parsons, Charles Pendergraft, Peggy Young
Jerry Dotson (Coach): Jerry has demonstrated energy, enthusiasm, and commitment consistently ever since 1989 when he first arrived at Cary High School.
Jerry has taken the Cross Country teams to a level of respect and admiration not only in our community but also in our region and in the state. Recently, our track and field teams have gained and earned that same respect statewide. Jerry has increased the number of participants from a dozen individuals to over 60 on the team. The Track and Field teams have also experienced the same increase in participation fielding 130 athletes the 2003 season. Both of the teams have accomplished conference, regional, state placer, and state championship status under Jerry's leadership.
Jerry has a demeanor with these students/athletes that is envied by his peers. His students/athletes value his guidance, wisdom, and advice tremendously. Jerry is as much a counselor than he is a teacher or coach. Jerry knows the rigors and demands that running requires; he recognizes that the kids need to do things that are fun to keep their health and their interest level up. Jerry has a the runners cross train by having alternative training methods to break up the monotony. They have scavenger hunts that involve running; they go swimming; they play elementary type competition games and other innovative techniques that the kids love. Jerry's compassion for their health is always a number one priority. He adjusts their practices and is instrumental in their treatment, therapy, and rehabilitation design with the Athletic Trainer and the physicians.
Jerry Horton (Class of '50): Jerry played four years as a starter on the baseball team and three years as a starter on both the football and basketball teams.
Jerry excelled as a halfback on the football team, starting guard on the basketball team and as a second baseman on the baseball team. He was co-captain of the basketball team his junior year and co-captain of the football team his senior year.
He was a hard worker who strived to excel and at all times gave 100%. He was the type of player that could inspire the younger men and give a lift to his team when it was needed.
Jerry was an outstanding all around player who could play with any team and be an asset to the team. Jerry's love of sports continued after his graduation as he participated while serving in the United States Navy.
Charles Pendergraft (Class of ??, Volunteer): Charlie is a CHS graduate but he did not participate in sports. He is an alumnus that has given tremendously of time, money and support to enhance the CHS athletic program.
With the growth of Cary and the success of the CHS football program in the 60's, the stadium was no longer adequate. Charlie led the way in bringing in funds and workers to provide larger and nicer bleachers. The press box was upgraded, with Charlie doing a great deal of the labor himself. For many year the maintenance of the activity buses was the responsibility of each school. Charlie kept the CHS buses running and often times at his own expense because of the lack of funds in the athletic department.
He has also been extremely active in the town of Cary's recreational programs, from sponsoring and coaching baseball and basketball teams to funding city league softball teams.
In the early 60's, he helped organize and develop the Pee Wee Football program. He many not have been an outstanding athlete at CHS, but he has certainly been instrumental in supporting and aiding a sports program at Cary High School that has produced many outstanding teams and individual athletes.
David Parsons (Class of '65): While at Cary High School, David lettered in three sports, football, wrestling, and track. He was an outstanding football player and track star. In 1964 he won the Most Outstanding Player trophy and played in the East-West football game. In 1964-65, he won the Cary High School Athlete of the Year trophy. In 1965, David was awarded the "Pepsi-Cola Philip Sorrell Award" (Best All-Around Senior).
David was an outstanding ahtlete as well as student. He was co-captain of the football team for three years, co-captain of the wrrestling team during his junior and senior years and placed third in the eastern NC Track Meet.
He was appointed to the US Naval Academy and while there, David played football and lacrosse.
James "Jimmy" Parsons (Class of '68): Jimmy was on the Varsity Football and Track Teams while at CHS. In his freshman year, he played on the varisty football team and won the Phillip Sorrell Sportsmanship Trophy in 1964-65. In 1967 he won the Most Valuable Football Player Trophy. His senior year he was awarded "Athlete of the Year" Trophy.
He was also an outstanding track athlete. At the State Track Meet at NC State University in Fall of 1968, Jim's first jump(long) broke the record. At that moment the track coaches from UNC-Chapel Hill and NC State told Jim that they would like to talk with him and his parents regarding a four year scholarship. Jim was offered a track scholarship at both schools. Since Jim planned to play football in college, he accpeted the scholarship at NC State since Carolina did not accept walks ons to play but State did.
Jim made the freshmen football team at State and played flank, half back and returned punts. He was the top scorer on the freshmen team. There were just two football players on the freshmen team that made All-State and Jim was one of them. At the beginning of his second year, Jim dropped out of football so he could spend more time on his subjects.
Peggy Young (Class of '46): Peggy Young was in the graduating class of 1946. She played women's basketball, which was the only female sport at the time. Peggy played center all four years, and during her time here the women's basketball team only lost two games. Her biggest achievement on the court was the time she scored a total of 50 points in a single game.
