Melinda Cowley, Joel Dramis, Tommy Lloyd Sr.
Melinda Cowley (Class of '81): Melinda played volleyball and softball while attending Cary High. She played volleyball as a junior and senior and played softball as a sophomore, junior, and senior.
She was All-Conference softball and 1980 and 1981, voted MVP for softball and 1980 and 1981 and was the overall Female Sportsmanship award winner in 1981.
Melinda server as a student athletic trainer while a student at Cary from 1979-1981. She also volunteered to assist and serve as an athletic trainer for Cary High sports while a trainer at NCSU. She dedicated countless hours to Cary High School Athletics in assisting student athletes in the care, prevention and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. With the support of Cary High School Athletic Staff, boosters, and school administrators, Melinda helped to initiate a Sports Medicine Program at Cary High School. She helped break gender barriers giving opportunities for females to be involved in sports medicine.
Joel Dramis (Class of '95): Joel attended Cary all four years and wrestled varsity his last three despite having no previous wrestling experience.
As a sophomore, Joel surprised everyone by winning one of the toughest weight classes in the regionals, defeating the top three seeds. After reaching the semi's at States, Joel placed 5th in the state. In his junior and senior years, he won States, completing his senior year undefeated.
After being named Wrestler of the Year for the State of North Carolina in 1995, Joel went to Pittsburgh and placed 7th in the nation, earning All-America status.
After walking on at NC State, Joel made the ACC finals before losing to one of the ACC's best wrestlers. Joel was named MVP for the NC State team after this accomplishment in 1997. Injuries in 1998 and 1999 forced Joel out of the lineup, but as Senior Co-Captain, he not only wont the ACC tournament but also won both his dual meet matches against UNC opponents, enabling State to win both matches by very slim margins. In the first match at UNC, Joel was asked to move up a weight class after making weight for 165. At the 174 weight, Joel wrestled a two-time ACC champ and pulled off the upset for the State win.
At the NCAA's that year, Joel defeated wrestlers from Michigan and Iowa before losing a very controversial one point bout in the All-American round to a future four-time All-American from Minnesota. This placed Joel in the Top-10 in the nation.
Team oriented as he was, Joel unselfishly shared his time and knowledge with the young wrestlers on the team, inspiring them as he helped them develop their ability. His commitment and work ethic, his attitude that tempered confidence with humility and respect, and his impeccable character modeled to his peers what it takes to succeed, both on the mat and in life.
Thomas Lloyd (Volunteer): Tommy was the public address announcer for the Varsity Football, Varsity Girls' and Boys' Basketball teams and the Track team for twelve years. Tommy would not accept any compensation for his many hours of service.
Tommy remembers beginning his announcing as far back as 1971 at the middle school and continuing on to Cary High School until 1994. He announced many of the State High School Track Meets when they were held at Cary or NCSU. He announced the state playoffs in football and basketball when held at Cary High School.
Tommy was well thought of by the coaching staff and was admired by all for his devotion to Cary High School.
