Carl Chaney, Megan Dillon Dudley, Allan Gustafson, Mike Ripberger
Franklin "Carl" Chaney (Class of 2000): Carl Chaney is one of the top all around, 3 sport athletes in Cary High School history. Carl was All Conference in 3 sports: football, basketball and track. He was All Region in football and track and All State twice in track . Carl was #2 in the state in reception football yardage his senior yearwith 1,148 yards. It was a school record at the time.
Carl was a complete athlete who moved from one sport to the next and excelled in all three. He was also involved in Student Council and other school activities while doing well academically.
Carl was also very involved in his church activities at Salem Baptist and during his summer "Time-off" went on many mission trips. Today Carol is an excellent teacher and coach at Cary High School.
Megan Dillon Dudley (Class of '97): As an outstanding player in a highly individualized sport, Megan was always about team. She was interested in program success and helped Cary to two conference titles in tennis in her four years. Off the courts, Megan was a member of the National Honor Society, 4 years academic all conference, and a highly visible face on campus. She earned conference player of the year honors twice as well as being a state qualifier once and a state quarter-finalist twice in a sport that recognizes only one state champion. On the courts, Megan's play was fiercely competitive, yet her character and sportsmanship was regarded by opposing coaches as the best in the conference .Her competitive nature and love of the game helped her to continue her career at NC State University where she had the opportunity to participate in a national championship.
Upon graduating, Megan took her love of the game to the next level and became the coach at Green Hope High School. As a coach, Megan not only instilled in her players a love of the game, but the value of character and sportsmanship. Though facing her former coach was awkward, Megan pulled it off with grace and dignity.
Allan "Gus" Gustafson (Class of '77, Coach): Coach "Gus" was a 1977 graduate of Cary High School. From Cary High School, he attended NC State University where he graduated cum laude in 1981 with a BA in History Education. Coach Gus has been a Cary High School teacher/coach since 1982. During this time he coached men's and women's cross country for six seasons, men's golf for 6 seasons, track and field for two, JV baseball for two, JV men's basketball for 11 and varsity men's basketball for 10. (***He is still coaching varsity men's basketball in 2018.)
Coach Gus's win loss record is above .500, however, what Coach Gus coaches are character traits and being responsible and accountable for one's self. Coach Gus preaches to his players the pursuit of being a "Five Star Player," a concept he developed as expectations for his players. The qualities and characteristics of a Five Star Player are: accept responsibility, show respect, develop selflessness, manifest integrity, and deserve success. Coach Gus's teams are known for their tenacity, guts, efforts and never giving up attitude. He has done tremendous things with the student/athletes he has come in contact with.
Gus works all year giving his players the opportunity to improve themselves for basketball. He opens the weight room, runs an intramural program in the fall, conducts skill development sessions, takes teams to summer camp, plays in a summer league and has even paid for a team from Cary High to participate in the NC State Games. Coach Gus has done these things all most every year he has coached basketball, all on his own time.
Gustafson has done tremendous things with the students/athletes he has come in contact with. Players and opponents will never forget him.
Michael "Rip" Ripberger (Class of '80): Mike participated in three sports at CHS. He lettered in baseball in 1978, 79, and 80. He continued baseball with the Legion team and since college he has enjoyed softball.
Since JV football, he had not played until his senior year at CHS, where he started at safety and played some receiver.
Mike was fortunate to have a talent for high jumping discovered and nurtured by Junior Strider coaches. Near the end of his junior year, Coach Roy Anderson coordinated with Coach Don Staley to allow him to compete in both track and baseball. Mike won the NCHSAA high jump championship that year and in his senior year. He received the CHS Athlete of the year award in 1980.
Mike signed a full track scholarship to attend North Carolina State University. At NC State he was ACC high jump champion in 1981 and 1984 and set the NC record of 7'3" that stood for many ears.
His coaches consistently complimented his enthusiasm and attitude.
