Thank you for subbing for me!
Please note: The Junior Librarians will set up the circulation computers. The step-by-step directions are located in a plastic page protector hanging next to my office door.
BEFORE SCHOOL
Turn on lights in Media Center
Make sure the carpet squares (ABC squares) are spread apart in rows in the storytime area. You may need to straighten them between classes.
Morning Duty 8:45-9:15am - Junior Librarians & Open Circulation in the Media Center
Junior Librarians can:
Sort books from the blue cart
Put books that go in bins back in their bins
Put the yellow labeled books in their appropriate section of the wooden non-fiction browsing bin in the Everyone section.
Go to class at the 9:10 bell.
If any other students come by, they MUST check in with their teacher first. They MUST return to their classroom no later than 9:10.
Water bottles, backpacks, lunch boxes/bags, playground equipment should all be left on/at the table by the front door next to the light switch panel.

SEATING & Book Return
ALL Grades As students come in, have them place any water bottles, bookbags, lunch boxes, etc. on the table or floor in the rainbow taped off section at the front door. You will need to check IN the books returned by kindergarteners and first graders Students in grades 2-5 should be able to do this on their own. Be sure to take out the lime green name tags from the books from kindergarten. The following students are fairly reliable for knowing the correct way to check in and checkout books. You can ask them to be helpers.
2nd grade - Everett & Eliza
3rd grade - Colbie & Cora
4th grade - Andrew, August & Kyden
5th grade - Annie & Adelaide
ALL Students will sit in the storytime area of the Everyone section.
Ask the classroom teacher to stay with you until you have students seated so that they can help to ensure students are not sitting with students they might play with or bother.
Have the line leader take the line and stop at the yellow dot on the floor just before the carpet squares.
Seat students one at a time, starting at the first square on the front row and going L to R, working your way from the first person in line, back. Again, ask the teacher to help rearrange or direct specific students who may need to sit elsewhere.
At the beginning of every single class I review the expectations using the following script:
My expectations today are the same as last week and all year long.
I expect that you will Be Safe and you will Be Respectful.
Right now being safe looks like sitting on your bottom, your body is in control and your body parts are kept to yourself. (If students will be moving around the room, substitute "using walking feet" for sitting on your bottom)
Right now being respectful looks like eyes and ears are on me, your mouth and body are quiet and you are paying attention. (If students are sitting for a lesson or read-aloud)
OR
Right now being respectful looks like using a whisper voice, staying on task to ________ and not bothering other students.
3rd Grade - 9:30-10:15am, 4th Grade - 1:25-2:10pm, 5th Grade - 2:50-3:35pm
As students come in, they should place any water bottles, backpacks or other items on the table at the front door. They should check their books in and either place them on the blue cart or in the appropriate bin.
As noted above, have the line leader take the line and stop at the yellow dot on the floor before the carpet squares.
After you have seated the students as directed above, review the expectations using the script above.
Let them know that if they want to sign my book (Ms. Bussell’s book), that they may do so when you call them for checkout. Place the book and pen in a spot where students can get to it AND you can see them at the same time. Please ask that they include their first AND last name when they sign.
For the rest of the time you will read any of the books I have left with these plans.
While you are reading aloud to students, call on 4-5 students at a time (I typically go by rows) to check out new books and/or sign the book.
Kindergarten - 10:20-11:05am, 1st Grade - 11:10am-11:55am, 2nd Grade - 12:35-1:20pm
As students come in, they should place their lunch bags, any water bottles,or other items on or under the table at the front door.
Collect their books and ask the line leader to stop at the yellow dot.
Check IN their books
Kindergarten - You scan their books in and remove the lime green name tags from their books. They may have left their tags here last week, in which case you will find them next to the Check OUT computer. Place their books on the blue cart.
1st & 2nd Grade - You scan their books and they put the books on the blue cart or in the appropriate bin. You’ll need to remind them to place the books “right side up, spine facing out.”
Seat students as previously directed, relying on the IA or teacher to let you know if specific students need to sit elsewhere.
Review the expectations as scripted above.
State the following at the beginning and anytime during the period that students are talking, playing or otherwise not paying attention:
“I will wait until you are ready. I will know you are ready when you are sitting on your bottom, your hands are in your lap, your eyes and ears are on me, and your mouth is quiet.”
Read any 2 of the books I have left with these plans.
After reading, ask students to turn their bodies around so that they are facing the computer.
You will walk over to the CheckOUT computer and use your finger to click on
Kindergarten - “Homeroom → mpotteiger →Select Patron.” Then click on each student’s name/picture and call on 4 at a time to go pick a book as long as they have ZERO books out already. If a student still has a book checked out, they may NOT get a new one today. Repeat this step for students who are in jbialos - Ms. Bialos’ class, though you will need to ask which students are in her class.
1st Grade - “Homeroom → msteinkirchner→Select Patron.” Then click on each student’s name/picture and call on 4 at a time to go pick one or two books as long as they have ZERO books out already. If a student still has a book checked out, they may only get one book. If they have two books out, they may not get any books today. Repeat this step for students who are in sschmidt - Mrs. Schmidt’s class, though you will need to ask which students are in her class.
2ndGrade - “Homeroom → msparrow→Select Patron.” Then click on each student’s name/picture and call on 4 at a time to go pick 1-3 books as long as they have ZERO books out already. If a student still has a book checked out, they may only get one book. If they have two books out, they may not get any books today. Repeat this step for students who are in eraynor - Mrs. Raynor’s class, though you will need to ask which students are in her class.
Checking Out books
Kindergarten - You will click on the child’s picture/name, scan the book they have brought you and place their lime green name tag inside of the book and stack it on the counter. Once all students who can check out have done so, place the books on the blue cube by the front door. The IA may take the books then or she may come back to get them later.
1st & 2nd Graders - You will click on the child’s picture/name, scan the book they have brought you and then they take their book with them.
If time remains, you may choose to read another book to the students, play Simon Says, play a Freeze Dance song on your phone, or let them read quietly.
LUNCH - 12:00-12:30pm
Planning - 2:15-2:50pm
End of Day
