Sub Plans for Media Center
for Evelyn Bussell
Afternoon of Thursday, November 3, 2022
Thank you for subbing for me! I will be “off-grid” so you won’t be able to text me if you have questions, but you can reach out to the art teacher across the hall if you need assistance. Please write me any notes about how your day goes, about particular classes or students that I should know about.
Water bottles, backpacks, lunch boxes/bags, playground equipment should all be left on/at the empty wooden display by the front door next to the light switch panel.
SCHEDULE:
12:35-1:20pm - 2nd Grade - Russ & Raynor
1:25-1:55pm - Planning
2:00-2:45pm - 4th Grade - Roy
2:50-3:35pm - 5th Grade - Mercer
SEATING & Book Return
ALL Grades As students come in, have them place any water bottles, bookbags, lunch boxes, etc. on the table or floor in the rainbow taped off section at the front door. Each class should be returning their books. The following students are fairly reliable for knowing the correct way to check in and checkout books. You can ask them to be helpers.
2nd grade - Deven & Maddison
4th grade - Jihoon & Emma & Jacob
5th grade - Aubrey & Emery
ALL Grades As students come in, have them place any water bottles, bookbags, lunch boxes, etc. on the table or floor in the rainbow taped off section at the front door. They should then check IN any book they are bringing back to the library. They will scan their book where it says Pleasant Grove on the back and place the book on the blue cart, unless it is a bin book and they know which bin to return it to.
All Students will sit in the Non-Fiction section. Have the line leader take the line and stop at the rainbow line on the floor just before the tables.
2nd Grade - Seat students 3-4 at a time at the tables. There should only be 3 chairs at Table 1.
4th & 5th Grade - Use the seating charts attached to the printed plans. They will NOT remember or know where they are to sit so you will need to tell each of them. Both of these classes can be challenging so I have assigned them seats to minimize behavior issues.
At the beginning of every single class I review the expectations using the following script:
My expectations today are the same as last week and all year long.
I expect that you will Be Safe and you will Be Respectful.
Right now being safe looks like sitting on your bottom, your body is in control and your body parts are kept to yourself. (If students will be moving around the room, substitute "using walking feet" for sitting on your bottom)
Right now being respectful looks like eyes and ears are on me, your mouth and body are quiet and you are paying attention. (If students are sitting for a lesson or read-aloud; if they are moving around for checkout then they are quiet and on-task)
2nd Grade - 12:35-1:20pm
After students are seated, you will project the laptop to the tv.
After students are seated, review the expectations as scripted above.
State the following at the beginning and anytime during the period that students are talking, playing or otherwise not paying attention:
“I will wait until you are ready. I will know you are ready when you are sitting on your bottom, your hands are in your lap, your eyes and ears are on me, and your mouth is quiet.”
Project the laptop to the tv, with the read aloud displayed.
Show the video of the read aloud.
After that, provide each student with a piece of paper and a pencil. You may give each table an eraser, reminding them that they have to share it.
Switch tabs to the drawing video. Play the video, stopping after each step so that students can follow along.
Once the scarecrow is drawn, call on 2-3 tables at a time to checkout. Start with whatever table is best behaved and remind them they need to be quick so that everyone has a chance to check out. You may need to help them at the check OUT computer. Directions are on the counter in picture and word form. Students may take their papers with them.
4th Grade - 1:25-2:10pm & 5th Grade - 2:50-3:35pm
After students are seated, review the expectations as scripted above.
State the following at the beginning and anytime during the period that students are talking, playing or otherwise not paying attention:
“I will wait until you are ready. I will know you are ready when you are sitting on your bottom, your hands are in your lap, your eyes and ears are on me, and your mouth is quiet.”
Provide each student with a copy of the worksheet and a pencil.
Direct students to listen to the book for the answers to the questions on the worksheet.
Read aloud Day of the Dead (Celebrations in My World).
After they complete the worksheet, they are to spend the remainder of the time coloring the Day of the Dead coloring sheet. Provide each table with one box of crayons.
While they are coloring, you may call on two tables at a time to checkout.
Planning - 2:15-2:45pm
Please use this time to cut the laminated magazine folders that are on the floor behind the circulation desk. Please leave a small amount of plastic on the bottom and sides. At the top, cut across the top so that you end up cutting under the metal clasp. Then carefully make sure you can open the top part.
You can also sharpen pencils during this time or wipe down tables.
End of Day
Straighten tables & chairs, and wipe down tables with clorox wipes in my office or on my desk.
Help in the Media Center w/K-2 students for carpool, 3:45-4:15pm.
