Thank you for subbing for me today! Please write me any notes about how your day goes, about particular classes or students that I should know about.
Before school/morning arrival: My daughter Felicity is a 5th grader and she will stop in to get the circulation computers up, logged in and ready to go. SEATING & Book Return
ALL Grades As students come in, take any books they are returning and scan the Pleasant Grove barcode on the back to check them in. Make sure the book shows up on the screen and then it may be placed on the purple cart.
Grades K & 1 will sit on the floor in the Fiction section. You will want them to come in and stop beside the bookcase under the 3D bug art, stopping at the voice level chart. Seat them one at a time facing the tv, spacing them 18-24” apart from each other.
Grades 2-5 will sit in the Non-Fiction section. Seat students 3-4 at a time in line order to tables (ie: first 4 students in line should sit together at the front left table; the next 4 students in line should sit together at the next table close to the tv; the next 4 students in line should sit together at the front right corner table; etc).
Digital Choice Board: 2nd through 5th grades will do this
Teachers for students in grades 2-5 have been instructed to have students bring their chromebooks to Media today.
5th grade students will likely drop their devices off on their way to Recess. Have them place their devices on the wooden display near the front door when they drop them off.
After students are seated, they should turn on their devices, open Chrome and open a new tab. In the address box (aka, url box) they should type in the address for today. Please note that they must type it exactly as it is written on the board. I have left papers with the address written on them as well so that you can place one at each table.
Students may do any of the items on the Saint Patrick’s Day Choice Board that appears. You will likely need to assist the 2nd graders the most with getting to the correct address.
While students are doing the choice board, go to the CheckOut computer and pull up their homeroom. Click on each student to see if they have any books out. If they have zero or only 1 book out, you may call on them to check out. I would suggest only calling a few students at a time.
Read Aloud & Video for K & 1st:
Once students are seated on the floor in the Fiction section, ask them if they can tell you what yesterday was (Read Across America!). Tell them that we are going to continue celebrating it by you reading aloud to them. And, tell them that even though February is over and we are in March, we are going to read another true story about an important black person to finish up Black History Month.
Read aloud “Trombone Shorty.” Be sure to show them the photographs of him at the end from when he was a little boy.
Tell students that now you will watch two videos of Trombone Shorty. Point out that the first one is one from when he was 13 years old. Show them the picture on the last pages of the storybook and have them look at the trombone. Tell them they have to tell you where he is in the video based on his instrument. You’ll need to go to bit.ly/Shorty13 to show that video. You only need to play the first 3½-4minutes.
The second video is from when Shorty grew up and was invited to play at the White House for the President of the United States. Tell them that not only does he play the trombone but that he also sings; and in this video we’ll get to hear him sing as well as get a chance to sing with him. You’ll need to go to bit.ly/ShortyWH to show that video. Help them out if they don’t catch onto the call and response in the song. You can play the entire video.
With time remaining, move the class to the carpet in front of the CheckOUT computers. Pull up their homeroom and click on each student’s name. If they have zero books out, call on them to pick a book and then check it out to them. Be sure to ask in kindergarten who is in Ms. Leon’s class and in 1st grade who is in Ms. Pettey’s class and look them up in their homerooms too.
End of Day
Shutdown all computers
Straighten tables & chairs
Go out and help at carpool, 3:45-4:15pm.
