Richard B. Russell Jr was a Georgian politician. He served from 1931- 1977, as both Governor and Senator. At the end of his political career, Russell served as president pro tempore of the Senate, the third in line for the presidential succession.
Richard B. Russell was a member of the United States Navy, even fighting in WWI.
Richard B. Russell Jr is best known for bringing military bases and military money to Georgia. He brought and maintained 15 military installations. Also, helped bring in 25 research facilities, including the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. He was opposed to Civil Rights legislation.
Carl Vinson is known as the "Father of the Two Ocean Navy." Vinson had a long political career, serving 25 consecutive terms in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Vinson concentrated on military affairs, so much so that he chaired the house Naval Affairs Committee and the House Armed Services Committee. He fought for military affairs and earned the nickname, "The Admiral."
President Richard Nixon named the third nuclear-powered carrier after Vinson. The University of Georgia also renamed the Institute of Public Affairs to the Carl Vinson Institute of Government.
