Dr. Martin Luther King Jr born in Atlanta, GA. After skipping grades in high school and entering Morehouse college at 15, he became the preacher of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church.
Dr. King Jr helped the Montgomery Bus Boycott after Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus. The Montgomery Bus Boycott lasted one year and during that time Dr. King Jr was threatened and even arrested.
Dr. King Jr also organized the March on Washington. His purpose was to showcase the Civil Rights Act of 1964. He wanted Congress to vote YES on the Civil Rights Act of 1964. During the March on Washington, Dr. King Jr gave his most famous speech, "I have a Dream." Dr. King Jr. modeled his nonviolent actions after Gandhi. Some of the non-violent methods he used were marches, demonstrations and boycotts.
The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) was formed after the Montgomery Bus boycott. They led many anti-discrimination marches, sit ins and protests. During this time, the SCLC promoted black voter registration in the South and stood up against discrimination in the south.
John Lewis was a Civil Rights Activist and a freedom rider. Lewis was influenced by Dr. King and followed in his footsteps doing nonviolent protests and marches. He volunteered to be a freedom rider.
John Lewis followed Dr King's influence by participating in sit ins and marches. He was the youngest participant at the March on Washington.
John Lewis went on to be a successful writer and politician. He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for the 5th congressional district (Metro - Atlanta area).
On July 17, 2020, John Lewis passed away.
The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee was created by high school and college student to help with MLK Jr's nonviolent tactics.
They organized protests, sit ins, and marches, but were often met with extreme violence. Many times, the freedom riders, like John Lewis, were beaten.
Fall of 1961, things began heating up in Albany, GA. A desegregation movement was happening that included such organizations like the NAACP and SNCC. The goal was to end all types of segregation in the city. Dr. King went to Albany to lend support.
Dr. King and the protestors used nonviolent tactics like marches, protests, sit ins and boycotts. During the Albany Movement, more than 500 protesters were arrested, including Dr. King.
Dr. King considered the Albany Movement a failure due to the fact it focused on too many things. Others disagree!! After King left, black voter registration led to a county run off for the nominee for the county commission seat.
The next spring “county commission removed all segregation statutes from their books.”
In August of 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and over 250,000 of his closest friends went to Washington D.C. Dr. King and the rest of the participants wanted to send a clear message to Congress, "VOTE YES for the Civil Rights legislation.
During the march, Americans were shocked at how peaceful the demonstration was. Following the lead of Dr. King, the March on Washington was a peaceful demonstration.
During the March on Washington, Dr. King delivered his famous "I have a Dream" speech. Dr. King hoped to inspire others in America to have a world free of segregation.
