We call William B. Hartsfield the transportation mayor. He is known as the "father of aviation" in Atlanta.
Hartfield was elected to city council. While on the council, he established the airport on an abandoned racetrack and later became the chairman of aviation. He realized that nighttime flying was increasing. He had lights installed at Candler field so they could fly at night. In addition to the airport, Hartsfield helped with the building of the Atlanta Expressways (interstate highways).
Hartsfield was elected mayor for 6 terms. During his tenure of mayor the city grew and the separation of races was front page news. He built up the city and made it known as "the city too busy to hate."
In 1971, after Hartsfield's death, the airport was renamed Hartsfield Atlanta international Airport.
