The 2011-2012 Tennessee basketball team was led by first-year head coach Cuonzo Martin. The team was predicted to finish near the bottom of the SEC due to a depleted roster and the departure of key player Tobias Harris. However, the team surprised many by finishing in second place in the SEC largely due to their strong defense and low turnover rate.
The team was led by emerging players Jordan McRae and Jeronne Maymon, who stepped up in the absence of their departed teammates. In addition, Jarnell Stokes was added to the team mid-season and contributed significantly to their success.
Despite their strong season, the Volunteers lost their first game in the SEC tournament to Ole Miss, ending their chances at making the NCAA tournament. They played in the NIT but were eliminated in the second round. Overall, Martin's first season as head coach of the Volunteers showed promise and the team's strong defense and ability to limit turnovers proved to be a winning formula. The team's success in the 2011-2012 season laid the foundation for future success under Martin's leadership.
