One of the highlights of the season was the Lady Vols' sixth perfect SEC season. They dominated conference play, winning all 14 of their games against SEC opponents. They also defeated several strong non-conference opponents, including Duke and Louisiana Tech. However, the Lady Vols suffered two losses that stood out. The first was their second straight loss to the Texas Longhorns. The second was yet another loss to their rivals, the UConn Huskies. In the NCAA tournament, the Lady Vols made it to the championship game once again. However, they faced UConn once again and were unable to come out on top. The final score was 73-68 in favor of the Huskies. This loss marked the Lady Vols' third consecutive defeat to UConn in the tournament.
Despite the disappointment of falling short in the championship game, the season did have some bright spots. Pat Summitt achieved a major milestone by earning her 800th win as a coach. The Lady Vols defeated DePaul 76-57 to secure the landmark victory, and Summitt became the fastest coach to reach this milestone.
