The 2005-2006 Lady Vols basketball season was a memorable one, marked by significant achievements and a disappointing end.
In a highly anticipated matchup, Tennessee hosted UConn in a No. 1 vs. No. 7 game, with a record-breaking on-campus crowd of 24,653 witnessing the Lady Vols' 89-80 victory. This set a new NCAA record for the largest on-campus attendance at a women's basketball game, a record that still stands today.
Redshirt freshman Candace Parker also made history during the season, becoming the first woman to dunk in an NCAA Tournament game and recording two dunks in the same game during UT's 102-54 win over Army in the NCAA First Round at Norfolk, Virginia.
Off the court, coach Pat Summitt made headlines by becoming the first college women's basketball coach to earn a one-million-dollar salary, signing a six-year deal that was scheduled to increase to 1.125 million in 2006-07 and 1.5 million in 2011-12.
In the tournament, Tennessee controversially received a two seed instead of the one seed that Summitt believed her team deserved. In the regional finals, the Lady Vols faced North Carolina, with Parker leading the scoring with 20 points. However, the Lady Vols fell behind early and were unable to catch up, ultimately losing 75-63. This marked the first time in five years that Summitt's team would not be appearing in the Final Four, a disappointing end to an otherwise successful season.
