The 2007/2008 team was led by Candace Parker, who continued to make history throughout the season. In a game against Kentucky, Parker executed her seventh and final dunk of her college career, solidifying her place in the Lady Vols record books. She holds the school records for single game (2), season (3) and career (7) dunks.
The Lady Vols had a successful season, finishing with a 36-2 record and securing their eighth NCAA National Championship. Parker was named the Final Four Most Outstanding Player for the second year in a row, leading the team to a 64-48 victory over Stanford in the championship game in Tampa, Florida. This victory marked Pat Summitt's final NCAA National Championship as head coach of the Lady Vols. After the season, Parker was taken as the No. 1 pick in the WNBA Draft by the Los Angeles Sparks. The rest of the starting five from the championship team, including Alexis Hornbuckle, Shannon Bobbitt, Nicky Anosike, and Alberta Auguste, were also selected in the draft. This marked the first time that all five starters from a championship team were drafted into the WNBA.
Pat Summitt was also honored for her lifetime of coaching achievements. She became the first women’s coach to earn the John R. Wooden Legends in Coaching Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing her unparalleled success on the court and her influence on the game of women’s basketball.
