One of the highlights of the 2001/2002 season was the game against the University of Connecticut. Tennessee and UConn had a long-standing rivalry and were both top-ranked teams in the country. When they faced off on January 5, 2002, they once again broke the record for the largest on-campus attendance for a women's basketball game. A staggering 24,611 fans packed into Thompson-Boling Arena to witness the matchup between the No. 1 Huskies and the No. 2 Lady Vols. Despite a valiant effort by Tennessee, UConn ultimately came out on top with a final score of 86-72.
Another memorable moment from the season came during a game against South Carolina. Senior Michelle Snow made history by becoming the first woman to dunk three times in a college career. The Lady Vols went on to win the game 80-61, but Snow's achievement was the talk of the game.
Pat Summitt, who had already established herself as one of the greatest coaches in women's basketball history, added to her legacy during the 2001/2002 season. She coached her team to the NCAA Final Four for the 13th time, surpassing the legendary John Wooden's record of 12 Final Four appearances with the UCLA men's basketball team. However, the Lady Vols' journey in the Final Four was cut short by UConn. The two teams faced off once again, this time in the semifinals in San Antonio. The game was played in front of a record-breaking crowd of 29,619 fans, the largest ever for an NCAA women's basketball game. Unfortunately for Tennessee, UConn once again came out on top with a final score of 79-56, ending the Lady Vols' season.
