As the 1977-1978 Tennessee basketball season approached, head coach Ray Mears was facing the departure of his two star players. Struggling with depression, Mears was unable to lead the team and took a leave of absence, leaving assistant coach Cliff Wettig in charge. The Volunteers struggled with Wettig at the helm, finishing the season with a disappointing 11-16 record.
After the season, Mears officially retired from coaching due to health reasons. Despite the difficult season, Mears' impact on Tennessee basketball extended far beyond his coaching success. Known for his entertaining and innovative marketing tactics, Mears helped cultivate a passionate fanbase, and his slogan "This is Big Orange Country" remains a beloved part of Tennessee sports culture.
