Orchard Day 2023
Apple Day 2023 and Yaxley Countryside Volunteers
Summer is over and autumn has begun. A time for picking and pruning, collecting seeds and providing hibernation habitats. We have started to harvest fruit from the Community Orchard in the Recreation Ground some of which will then go to local food banks.
The orchard has a great variety of trees with a mix of old traditional apples such as Christopher Pippin as well as modern commercial varieties such as Gala. There are plums, pears and rhubarb plus we have hazel nuts, walnuts and figs. The orchard is a haven for wild flowers, insects, birds and amphibians with hundreds of different species being recorded.
The Community Orchard will be open to the public on:
National Apple Day – Saturday October 21st from 10.00 -3.00.
Apple Day was launched in 1990 to celebrate the importance of orchards to our landscape and culture.
There will be displays about the orchard and activities for children. Come and get a closer look at the trees if you are thinking about growing a fruit tree in your own garden and get some advice on how to look after it.
As part of the celebrations there will be performances from Creative Arts East throughout the day. There are two different productions to be seen - Buzz and The Allotment Project.
Yaxley Community Orchard is located in the lower part of the Recreation Ground near to Willow Pond and the skate ramps.
We hope to see you there.
