As one year is coming to an end we are thinking about the next one…..
Yaxley Countryside Volunteers recently celebrated 40 years of helping our local environment. Our main event was Apple Day 24 which saw the Community Orchard open to visitors and activities in the Owen Pooley Hall. There were displays about the history of YCV, games to play, apple juice to sample, cakes to eat and fruit from the orchard to try. Thanks to Yaxley Parish Council we even had a very entertaining theatre group with a puppet show. Our next public event will be Blossom Day in spring 2025 where the orchard will be open to the public again.
Harvesting fruit and collecting seeds marks the end of one year but sowing those seeds and planting bulbs is looking forward to the next. YCV have an annual schedule of planting bulbs in several local sites. We plant a variety of bulbs that will come up and give us a splash of colour in the dull days of late winter. As well as lifting our spirts it is important to provide a source of food for insects emerging from hibernation. We try to have something in flower from February through to April and we have different plants in different locations eg bluebells under trees and daffodils out in the open amongst the grass. These early spring flowers are very important for our local wildlife and we would encourage everyone to have a go at putting some bulbs in their garden or in a pot on the patio.
