Yaxley Apple day 2024 was a wonderful celebration
Apple Day was launched in 1990 to celebrate the importance of orchards to our landscape and culture & this year Yaxley community orchard was once again open to enjoy.
The day was a great success with games & cakes enjoyed by all & the brilliant performers from The Handmade Theatre (https://www.creativeartseast.co.uk/) delighted children & adults alike
We very much look forward to seeing you all in spring for blossom day with the orchard open for everyone to come enjoy the splendid sights & fragrance of the spring blossom

The Volunteers have been very busy again at the cemetery
Its a very busy time of year for the volunteers with lots of projects & activities around the village, aiming to make Yaxley an even more attractive place for both residents & local wildlife
Most recently they have been pruning back the lavender at the cemetery along Dovecote road. By pruning back we can ensure the herbs flower stronger in the following year, which is good for insects & bees as well as looking their best for us to enjoy as well.

YCV recently gave a talk to the Age Well Club on....
Floriography – the language of flowers
· That flowers have meanings is very ancient and found across many cultures but a formal language of flowers was first introduced into Britain by Lady Mary Wortley Montague in the early 18thC from her time spent in Turkey as wife of the British Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire.
· Reached its peak in Victorian times when you could buy dictionaries of flowers…. A single red rose still has the same meaning today as it did then but if you were sent a yellow carnation in return then the message was clear that they weren’t interested.
· Wild flowers were part of this secret code …….
Daisy stood for innocence and purity
Daffodil for rebirth and new beginnings
Poppy was for consolation and remembrance even before the first world war
Forget-Me-Not – does what it says on the tin – true love and memories
Bluebell for constancy and humility
People would carefully select and arrange flowers to convey a specific message –
The arrangement’s colours, types of flowers and even the way they were presented all held a significance lost on us today.

We are a group of volunteers who work together to improve the natural environment within the Cambridgeshire village of Yaxley.
Yaxley Countryside Volunteers began in 1984 when three friends, Dave Miners, Bob Oakley & Reg Bingham, got together to try and improve the environment for the residents wildlife. At that time there were very few trees in Yaxley & our main target was to increase the number of trees in the parish. We have since planted over 3000 trees & hundreds of meters of hedges, dug numerous ponds & carried out lots of tasks on behalf of residents and the Parish Council.
We meet most weeks, and are always eager to welcome anyone who has a similar interest in improving their local area to the benefit of all.
The volunteers meet Fridays for 2 hrs to complete ongoing projects or maintain existing areas for the benefit & enjoyment of Yaxley residents & wildlife. If you want to get involved & meet the volunteers please use the contact details below. No experience necessary & everyone welcome
