Blooming lovely 2023

Blooming lovely – it’s blossom time in the orchard

Yaxley Community Orchard can be found near the pond in the Recreation Ground. There are over 80 different trees producing traditional and modern fruit varieties including apples, pears and plums. There are walnuts, hazelnuts, wild blackberry and even rhubarb. We also cultivate some less well known types of fruit such as medlars and quince. The orchard is managed using organic methods and is home to many species of flowers, insects, birds and other wildlife.

At this time of year the orchard is bursting with blossom and the buzzing of bees busy collecting pollen. Each individual flower will become a fruit once pollinated and can be harvested later in autumn. The amount of blossom determines the amount of fruit produced but it can depend very much on the weather – a late frost can damage flower buds, droughts can reduce the size of fruit and gales can knock fruit off the tree.

Yaxley Countryside Volunteers tend the orchard – planting, pruning and weeding all take place at various times of year. Spring and early summer sees the orchard at its visual best and put on a wonderful display of beautiful blossom. Please do come to the orchard and see how lovely it is.

The orchard was planted in 2019 by YCV on land made available by Yaxley Parish Council and support from HDC and the Co-operative Society. The orchard will be open to the community on Apple Day in October.
