The Promise of Spring

March is upon us and winter fades away.....

...... although there can still be cold spells, frost and even snow. Animals are coming out of hibernation and birds are looking for nesting sites. YCV has developed links with the Yaxley Hobby Hub and we will be using their workshop facilities to build more habitat boxes at the start of the month. As habitats disappear due to changes caused by development etc it is important to try to make up for this loss and providing nesting sites for birds, insects and small mammals is one way we can help

As well as practical actions to help the environment YCV is also involved in working with local landowners on the national farmland bird survey at this time of year. It is important to monitor how wildlife is doing so we also survey the variety of wildflowers found in the orchard and carry out pond dipping at local ponds to assess the water quality and creatures living there.

YCV has been active in the village for four decades and our efforts have recently been recognised with nominations for the King’s Award for Voluntary Service and BBC Wildlife Heroes.
