Lifting
Lifting Equipment
When I graduate, I'm really going to miss these.
I taught myself how to lift from the ground up essentially starting at the end of fall term freshman year, and I couldn't have done it without free access to W&L's facilities - shoutout to everybody who supported me along the way!
Section II
ROGUE racks come with a barbell, bench, safety rails, pull-up bar, and lots of accessories.
In case you need chalk for better grip, look for a large red bucket by the door to Section I.
Section III
Flat Bench (2) and Incline Bench (2)
Don't be afraid to ask for a spot!
Squat/deadlift platforms (2)
Accessories easily hook into the metal rack!
Just getting started?
"Big 3" Lifts: Bench, Squat, Deadlift
Weight Training will teach you these lifts in-person, but in case you haven't taken it, these videos by Jeremy Ethier are incredibly well-made, entertaining, and informative!
My personal advice:
If you're just starting out, check out Recommendations/Tips! Those are some lessons from my own journey, but two key points:
1) Form over weight.
Your healthy body isn't worth sacrificing -- a few extra pounds on the bar 1) isn't impressing anyone and 2) isn't worth a lifetime of chronic pain.
2) Don't be afraid to ask for help.
We all started somewhere, so don't be afraid to ask someone for a spot. Any self-consciousness is better than getting injured.
(If asking another gym-goer is intimidating, visit the front desk!)
Whether it's your first or 73rd time lifting, I hope it brings you as much joy as it's brought me. Stay safe and have fun!
