MARGARET SYMINGTON 1847-1914

Known by her family as “Maggie”, [1] she was born at Essex circa 1847.  She died from cardiac disease on 11 December 1914 in the Hospital for the Insane, Beechworth, Victoria. [2]  She had been admitted to the Asylum on 12 July 1912 with senile dementia.

She married James Dodemaide, a wheelwright, on 29th December 1886 at Moor Street, Fitzroy, Victoria. Her sister-in-law, Annie Tanner, was a witness to the marriage (Reg. Number 7106). James Dodemaide could be described as a very ordinary type. His curriculum vitae does not reveal any noteworthy accomplishments but exposes a number of court appearances for minor offences.

JAMES DODEMAIDE c.1853-1916 [3]

A wheelwright by trade, he married Margaret Symington when he was aged 32. He was born at Bacchus Marsh in about 1853 but his is birth does not appear in the Victorian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages. He died a pauper in Wangaratta in 1916 aged 64 years. His parents were Bacchus Marsh pioneers, William Dodemaide of Somerset (he died 20 February 1908 aged 88) and Mary Bridget Deagan of Tipperary (she died in 1913 aged 87).[4] [5] They married in 1848 (Reg. No. 595). They are buried in the Catholic section of Bacchus Marsh Cemetery, Grave 3, Row E. William Dodemaide was a colonist of 67 years. [6] Their eldest son William married Ellen Stewart in 1874. He died at Ballarat in 1928; their second son Thomas, born at Merri Creek in 1852, married Mary Lawless in 1878. He died at Mansfield in 1930 aged 80; their daughter Mary Ann Elizabeth married Michael Hogan in 1875. She died in 1942 aged 82. A son John was born at Merri Creek in 1856; Michael was born at Merri Creek 1862; David in 1863 at Bacchus Marsh. A son Charles Henry was born at Bacchus Marsh in 1858. He died at Mildura in 1938. In 1876 James Dodemaide advertised that he had commenced business as a wheelwright in Bacchus Marsh. [7]

He was pursued for outstanding rent when he was brought before the Bacchus Marsh Court of Petty Sessions on 5 July 1878, charged with "use and occupation of a house." [8] [9]

In 1880, he appeared again in the Court of Petty Sessions, charged with assault. The Bench held that there was provocation, but that he had committed a serious assault, for which he was fined 5. [10]

The Shire of Bacchus Marsh Valuation Rates for 1880-1881 have William and James Dodemaide as owners of a 391 ½ acre property at Merrimu (Pyrete Creek), valued at £44. [11]

James Dodemaide was employed with his brother at Doherty’s stables in Benalla. [12]

In 1902 he was charged with being drunk and disorderly in Bridge Street, Benalla, and was discharged by the Court with a caution. [13]

No official record of his birth has come to light. He died in the Wangaratta Hospital in 1916 aged 64 years. His death notice describes him as "a very old resident of Benalla" and maintains that he was unmarried. [14]
