MARGARET SYMINGTON 1800-1878
This carte de visite portrait of Margaret Symington came from the family album of her brother William Symington 1802-1867, where it was placed next to a portrait of her husband, Dr. Robert Bowie.
Margaret was the second daughter of William Symington and Elizabeth Benson.
She was born at Larbert, Falkirk, on 16 June 1800. On 5th January 1818, at seventeen years of age, she married Dr. Robert Bowie at Saint Mary At Hill, London. Margaret Bowie was a witness. Dr. Bowie worked as a general practitioner in London, in partnership with his younger brother William.
Her father died at her London home in 1831 at 44 Burr Street, Lower East Smithfield.
The Bowies lived at Valence House, Dagenham, from about 1838 until 1845. [1] In 1841, her brother William was living nearby at Wangye House. He was then employed as an inspector of works for the Great Eastern Railway.
The 1851 census shows the family living at 5 Coburn Terrace, Stratford Le Bow, in the parish of Tower Hamlets. The household had two teenage servants.
She emigrated to Australia with her family in the Athenian in October 1851. [2]
She died at the age of 78 years from “chronic hepatitis” on 14 December 1878 in the residence of her son in law, Dr. Daniel, Heidelberg Road, Clifton Hill.
She was buried in the Melbourne General Cemetery on 16 December 1878. Her son Walter Bowie of Sunbury is the informant named on her death certificate.
