NOTES ON ANN MILLAR

Very little is recorded about Ann Millar (or Miller) who was the mother of James Symington 1788-1862, William Symington's illegitimate first son. The death record for James shows her married name as McMillan and her occupation "domestic servant."

James was born in Wanlockhead in 1788. There is no birth entry for James in old parochial records nor is there any mention of his birth in kirk session records. The Church of Scotland at the time took a very dim view of extramarital "fornication". William Symington and Ann were fortunate indeed to avoid the wrath of the church. The Wanlockhead church was subordinate to the church at Sanquhar which came under the jurisdiction of the Penpont Presbytery. At the time, references to Wanlockhead are scarce in the archival records and it appears that William and Ann totally escaped the notice of the Kirk session.

Ann later married Alexander McMillan, a Wanlockhead lead miner. James was brought up in Wanlockhead by Ann and Alexander McMillan and had at least five younger half brothers and sisters.

Review of the sadly deficient Old Parochial Records for the region, reveals an Anne Millar who was baptized on 18 September 1769 in Wanlockhead, [1] the legal daughter of James Millar and Janet March who married in Wanlockhead; their banns proclaimed on 13 November 1768. [2] A James Miller was employed as a smelter for the Scots Mines Company at Leadhills from 1753 to 1755; other possible relatives by the surname Miller who were listed in the mining company bargain books were: David, miner, 1738-1744; William, miner, 1760-1779; John, ore smelter, 1766-1798.

Note also that in 1758 a George Millar and Margaret Telfer in Wanlockhead had a daughter named Janet Millar.

An Alexander McMillan was baptized in Wanlockhead on 10th September 1769.
