Youth-Talent-Mentors is a case study concept that offers career services and a job recruiting platform for graduate students and alums in Australian Colleges and Universities. For this case study I am in the process of developing a concept design for the platform (desktop and mobile), and create the brand image.
Youth-Talent-Mentors is a digital platform limited to young professionals or students - allowing them to work with an established organisation struggling to recruit for entry-level positions and support them in finding other young talents. At present, this case study is in the exploration phase, and I will be provide more detailed information in the near future.
Develop a responsive platform focusing primarily on desktop usability while ensuring it functions seamlessly on desktop and mobile devices.
Revamp the current website by enhancing its information structure and user-friendliness while incorporating contemporary visual design elements.
Refresh the brand to evoke a more inviting and contemporary impression.
Determine the target user base, primarily organisations, and gain insights into the obstacles they encounter while seeking suitable candidates.
What key features do businesses seek in the ideal candidate?
Explore direct and indirect competitors to discern their strategies for facilitating connections between graduating students and young professionals with industry partners.
Analyse design patterns employed by competitors to enhance user-friendliness.
Investigate user preferences regarding website access methods, specifically whether users favour mobile phones, desktop computers, or tablets, and the rationale behind their choices.
User research involved semi-structured interviews with a diverse set of six participants, including two young professionals, two students, and two recruiters. The aim was to develop empathy and gain insights into their respective experiences in the job search and candidate selection processes. This approach gave me a comprehensive understanding of their goals, challenges, and motivations. It served as a foundation for assessing potential areas of improvement by profoundly empathizing with the end-users.
"It's not just about the skills and qualifications; it's about finding someone who fits the company culture and shares our values. That's the real challenge.", Recruiter.
"I often feel companies only look for the right qualifications but do not appreciate fresh perspectives from somebody with a diverse background.", Young professional.
Three main insights have surfaced following user interviews, contextual inquiry, and an analysis of the collected data.
The presence of proactive notifications, such as receiving updates on the latest job openings and job seekers, keeping track of application status, and knowing eligibility for applications, empowers users to 'stay updated' and self-assured.
The capacity to establish connections and expand one's professional network allows users to engage with alums, recruiters, and employees, ultimately enhancing their chances of achieving success.
The convenience of being able compare candidates, without the hassle going through extensive profiles.
Utilising research findings, I leveraged the results to generate multiple outputs to gain a deeper understanding and foster empathy towards our user base. My objective was to comprehensively grasp the user experiences into a broader spectrum, encompassing the physical, social, and emotional aspects.
After conducting thorough research and profoundly understanding the users' needs, the subsequent phase involved meticulously outlining the website's information architecture.
To accomplish this, revisiting and examining the initial design brief became crucial. This process entailed a comprehensive examination of both business and user objectives identified through our research. It was critical to pinpoint convergence and divergence between these goals, ensuring a strategic alignment in the website's design and functionality.
Development of a comprehensive profile that can be utilised for all future job applications.
Incorporation of a messaging feature to facilitate connections and enable communication with recruiters, alums, and other professionals.
Provision of a unified platform for job search, application submission, detailed job description review, and messaging with relevant industry personnel.
Access to a pool of resources and topics tailored to assist young professionals and senior management
Availability of tutorials to guide candidates in crafting effective resumes, preparing for mock interviews, and other pertinent aspects of the application process.
Inclusion of easy apply and quick apply options to streamline the application process.
• Facilitate the connection between job seekers and employers while assisting companies in acquiring talent
• Ease the financial burden on organisations that are in search of new employees
• Foster an inclusive work environment that attracts and retains talented individuals
• Expand our network base to increase our reach and effectiveness
• Boost revenue through strategic growth initiatives.
• The interface design is easy to use across the platform
• The design is accessible and inclusive
• The design is optimised for different screen sizes and devices
As part of the product development process, it is essential to identify the detailed requirements and prioritise features to create a feature roadmap. Based on the data gathered and understanding the goals, the feature roadmap helps identify the must-have, nice-to-have, and features that can come later. Given the time constraints, prioritising features for the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) is crucial.
The platform offers benefits for three diverse user groups - young professionals, recruiters/employers, and senior management. The next steps are to develop a sitemap to illustrate the connection between the content present on the website and establish the site's general structure. The hierarchy and placement of the website's content will be visualised accordingly.
