I was invited to TsingHua University to present my Ph.D. research as part of the joint Workshop on Immersive Technology.
"Designing media architecture with augmented reality and virtual reality tools"
We had the chance to visit the future lab and see their amazing work. Thanks to the organizers of the future lab and everybody who was involved!
For the second time, we ran our workshop “Augmenting Cities and Architecture with Immersive Technologies”. This time at ISMAR 2019 in Beijing, China.
We invite interested parties from a variety of backgrounds to participate and join our workshop to discuss how Immersive Technologies can best contribute to Augmenting Cities and Architecture. Immersive technologies such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR) have the potential to augment experiences within cities and the process of designing architecture. Moreover, the 5G network which has low-latency and fast speed has begun. However, more work is needed to understand specific applications within these areas and how they can be designed. Therefore, the main aim of the workshop is to discuss and ideate use-cases for creating situated immersive AR, VR, and MR applications for the purpose of making cities more engaging and to help design the cities of the future over 5G network.

I'm delighted that our contribution to the conference "CONNECTIONS: EXPLORING HERITAGE, ARCHITECTURE, CITIES, ART, MEDIA" is now available as online-presentation. I thank the whole team (Marcus Foth, Glenda Caldwell) for the great teamwork, especially to Kavita Gonsalves who is driving the project.
Placemaking is the process where institutions and communities upgrade neighbourhoods and public spaces through physical and creative interventions (Project for Public Spaces (PPS), 2007). Due to limitations of place, time and presence, this process includes a few and excludes many (Arnstein, 1969; Cardinal, 2006). Even then, the excluded and marginalised engage in subtle tactics of resistance (de Certeau, 2011) and produce their city (Jacobs, 1992). This paper proposes the concept of Radical Placemaking as a placemaking tactic of the marginalised where the term ‘Radical’comes from Paulo Freire’s seminal work ‘Pedagogy of the Oppressed’(2005). The elements of ‘Radical Placemaking’are categorised into ‘who’,‘how’and ‘what’.
I am was invited to be part of the Panel discussion at the MAB meetup organised by Hamburg University of Applied Sciences. I was happy to contribute to an exciting debate on Media architecture in the University context.
Media architecture has made its way into teaching and research at universities. This includes the design of media content at art academies, the architectural integration into urban space, technical implementation, and software development in the disciplines of event technology or computer science. In addition, some universities have been able to install media facades, often as part of a research project. During the integration phase as well in the long term, they all face completely different challenges, such as maintenance, curating of content, or changing responsibilities after the completion of a project. So how do you meet such challenges in a university context and what solutions have been already found? And ultimately how to teach and research this transdisciplinary field?

To create habitat corridors for wildlife, critters and pollinators (birds and bees)
To empower our communities to connect
To provide everyday interactions with nature for yourself and your community
Nature strips for climate change focus on supporting street trees and planting native shrubs, grasses and groundcovers for wildlife habitat. (And they’re better for people too.)
During the Places the Virtual Reality Festival, I organised a learning experience for students of the University of applied sciences Bochum. Students developed concepts for an empty shop in Gelsenkirchen-Ückendorf, Germany.
The design steps and results could be viewed live on a screen and in virtual reality by the visitors. Besides, Visitors were able to contribute their ideas or take part in the 3D modelling themselves. On the one hand, the students examined how new media influences the design process and at the same time, they were able to receive feedback from visitors.
“When a colleague drew my attention to the Places _ VR Festival, I thought the event was a great opportunity to develop a VR project together with students from the Faculty of Architecture at Bochum University of Applied Sciences. I approached the event with relatively low expectations and saw it as a public forum for the students to present their projects. All the more, I was pleasantly surprised when a multitude of interesting networking and cooperation opportunities arose during the festival days.”
I curated the interdisciplinary exhibition "Architektur Digital" in the winter garden of the UnPerfekthaus in Essen, Germany. The change to new technologies is changing work and communication in the professional field of architecture. I taught together with Dominik Kraatz an advanced CAD course at the University of Applied Sciences in Bochum. We employed several techniques from various 3D software. The exhibition shows design-posters, portfolios and video of the students and could be visited until March 27, 2018.
From 2016 till 2018, I have been part of Start-up Inzept3D. The browser-based software supports the design process, has been available at https://inzept3d.com since then. The solution enables users to create interactive 3D visualizations at low cost without expert knowledge. The interactivity of the design presentation simplifies communication with the client. Afterwards, users can adjust the building orientation and materials, do sun studies, or create a virtual tour through the model. A rendered draft can be shared through a link to a customer, who can view the interactive 3D visualization on the PC, tablet or smartphone regardless of the platform. Dominik Kraatz and his team, consisting of Sascha Sohn, Amir Familian, Inga Jasper and I, are funded by the European Regional Development Fund (EFRE), the Ministry for Innovation, Science and Research of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Department of Architecture at Bochum University of Applied Sciences.
As part of my master studies, we organise a Symposium on colour-strategies with architecture gallery Aedes in Berlin, Germany.
Perception and the use of colors based on individual experience and perception intention. Color impressions are kept in the brain and are the result of a protected system. The AMM symposium "colourID" dealt with questions of the social meaning and spatial influence of colors. It means the meaning of color as an expression in text and space. Architects, scientists, artists and communication experts and through the guidelines of rights and communication This is about color as a strategic tool. How does one own identity with color? How can color manipulate? What is the significance of color in times of digital transformation? Who is the world of the megatrends in color for fashion and industry? And what role does that play for architecture and communication?
As an employee of Dipl.-Ing. Eva Paar at the University of applied Sciences and Arts Dortmund I had the unique opportunity to help design and organise some of the well-known lecture series at the School of Architecture. Speakers from established architecture studios gave exciting lectures on various projects.
