EmComm Exercise - Recordings

The exercise is pretty much over; now we're just cleaning up. Tune into the net tomorrow night for a debriefing at the round table, and look for a follow-up post here. In the mean time, I've provided recordings (from my house) of the VHF and HF nets, so you can form your own opinions!

First, the picture (click for larger version), then the explanation.

I started the recording at exactly 09:00:00 PDT, so it's easy to figure out exactly what time something occurred.

Track 1

This is the original recording, containing both the VHF net and the subsequent HF net, from which all of the other recordings come. It is unaltered except that I did apply a noise gate so that the silent portions are truly silent, eliminating stray circuit noise. And, of course, MP3 compression artifacts....

Note that because it was recorded from my radio, you will never hear AD7UF! There are, instead, chunks of silence during my transmissions. I hope that one day someone else will record a net so that I can hear how I sound!

Track 2: HF-Raw.mp3

This is the HF portion of the net. It runs from 10:17:15 AM to 10:37:38 AM.

Net Control started on the 80m band, then moved to the 40m band for a while before disappearing entirely. You can hear my band-switching throughout the recording.

Track 3: VHF-Raw.mp3

This is the VHF portion of the net. It runs from 9:00:00 AM to 10:17:15 AM.

Track 4: VHF-Quiet.mp3 (and VHF-Quiet.ogg)

I went through track 3 and manually suppressed the noise heard when I turned the squelch off or the signal was otherwise to weak to be intelligible at all. It preserves the timing but makes it a little more pleasant to listen to. I included a file in .ogg format, because Vorbis does a better job of compressing the silent sections than MP3 does, making for a bit smaller download.

Track 5: VHF-Compact.mp3

All of the slient areas have been deleted, so that the entire 77-minute net only takes up 24 minutes. Guaranteed to be a minimum of 69% less boring to listen to.
