The Valley Ridge Concerned Residents' Group attended an announced public meeting hosted by the Varsity Community Association at the Varsity Community Centre. Detailed presentations and a Q&A Session addressed concerns regarding the City of Calgary's proposal to rezone all residential lots city-wide to R-CG (rowhouses/townhouses). We estimate that approximately 250 people were in attendance. This was the VCA's 4th meeting and they are to be congratulated for running a very effective meeting that was well received by all. It is unfortunate the VRCA did not pay attention and use Varsity as a model for community communications.
The City of Calgary has held six public information sessions that were attended by a grand total of 660 Calgarians. Citywide rezoning is the most significant, and contentious, change to planning policies brought forward in decades. Its significance deserves nothing less that a referendum so that all Calgarian may have their say, and not left to 15 City Councillors, none of whom, we understand raised this important issue during the last 2021 election.
The City of Calgary held three additional In-person Information Sessions in mid-March, 2024. We are unaware of the attendance levels at these meetings.
