Last January 8, 2019 Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Company announced its bankruptcy with a massive debt of 400 million dollars from five Philippine banks and 90 million dollars from Korean lenders. This has caused the majority of Hanjin workers to lose their jobs over the last few years. Hanjin is a large Korean Shipbuilding Company located in Subic Bay, Zambales. Being the 4th largest shipbuilding plant in Asia, Hanjin has employed 30,000 skilled and semi-skilled Filipino shipbuilders. The company is complete with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, a stark contrast to the state of its workers, even when the company was at its peak. Firstly, their workers were victims of contractualization under 21 subcontracting agencies. Moreover, from 2008 to 2012, 52 deaths, and 28 injuries ranging from minor to severe, along with 12 cases of maltreatment have been recorded due dangerous working conditions. Furthermore, when 30 workers, who were also members of the Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Phils. Inc. Workers Union (HHICPIWU) brought to the attention of the Senate Labor Committee the realities of the worker conditions in Hanjin in 2009, their efforts were met with retaliation through forced termination from the company.
And now more than ever, with Hanjin facing bankruptcy, its workers are facing difficult times that come with extreme lay-off done by the shipbuilding company. Last December 2017, even prior to filing for voluntary rehabilitation, Hanjin began to start laying off 7,000 workers and additional 3,000 workers early this year.
UP Kalipunan ng mga Mag-aaral ng Sosyolohiya stands together with the displaced workers of Hanjin in their fight to demand their rights to receive separation pay, and to be refunded the 3% bond that was taken from the workers’ salary by Hanjin management. Moreover, and still together with the Hanjin workers, we call on the Hanjin management to enforce a moratorium on the housing loans, without penalty, for the workers residing in Hanjin Village until they are re-employed. Lastly, we call on the UP Community to join in raising awareness about the conditions of Hanjin’s workers. We hope that through collective action that our voices will be heard.
