About Us

UP Kalipunan ng mga Mag-aaral ng Sosyolohiya or UP KMS was founded on February 22, 1994 as it changed its former name as the UP Sociological Society. UP KMS is mainly an academic organization that strives to promote Sociology as both a discipline and a perspective. UP KMS believes that sociology is essential in understanding contemporary issues faced by the individual and society. Likewise, the organization aims to use sociological knowledge in contributing to relevant discourses in and about society while trying to have a positive impact for the future of the world.

Each individual plays a role in developing not only themselves but the society as well. Thus through various events such as fora, educational discussions, conferences, and socio-civic projects, UP KMS seeks to help individuals in understanding one’s self, others, and society, as well as to be catalysts of constructive changes.

In the organization's pursuit to forward Sociology as a perspective and discipline, UP KMS upholds four guiding pillars in the analysis of the individual and society — critical, dynamic, historical, and Filipino-oriented. As society is constantly changing, UP KMS remains open to the various and different perspectives on the individual and society, considering those most relevant to the current conditions. The organization also recognizes the importance of being critical of the information available to us and does not forget to look towards history to understand the relationship between past occurrences and present situations. UP KMS particularly strives to apply a sociological analysis focused on the Philippine context.

From then until now, UP KMS bears a strong will for change and development not only for the students of sociology, but also for the greater society.
