Description:
Clouds of large bunches of fragrantly scented, blush white flowers in spring, followed by abundant dainty yellow fruit in autumn. Harvest the fruit to make crab apple jellies and jams or leave on the tree for the birds. An excellent pollinator for apples due to the timeliness and compatibility of its pollen.
Malus Growing Tips:
Crab Apples are self-fertile, and very useful as pollinators for a variety of fruit trees. Full sun or part shade lover, best grown in fertile, moist, deep, loamy soils. Requires minimal pruning in late winter or spring to remove damaged, diseased or misplaced growth.
Golden Gem is a well-known crab-apple featuring bright white spring blossom followed by yellow crab apples in the autumn.
Most crab apples are good pollinators of mainstream apple varieties but Golden Gem is especially good because of the quantity, timeliness and compatibility of its pollen. Its flowering should coincide with apples in flowering groups 3 and 4.
Strongly scented, pure white flowers are produced in dense clusters in late spring, followed by pea-sized, yellow fruit
