WHAT IS  JOB CORPS?

Job Corps is a career and technical training program that includes free housing, food, basic health care and academic support for qualifying individuals 16-24 years of age.  This program is federally funded through the Workforce Opportunity Innovation Act (WIOA).

We have twelve trades at TPJCC: two medical trades, one soft trade, eight hard trades and one transportation trade.

Computer Service Technician, 

Building Construction Technology, Carpentry, Cement, Electrical, Glazing, Painting, Plastering, Welding, and, 

Seamanship


KEY BENEFITS

● Job Corps offers career technical training in high-growth industries.

● Students can earn a high school diploma or the equivalent, or college credits through Job Corps.

● Job Corps is tuition-free to eligible young people and provides housing, meals, basic medical care, a living allowance, hands-on training and prepare for a career.

● After students complete the program, Job Corps offers transitional support services, such as help finding employment, housing and transportation.

● Job Corps graduates either enter the workforce or an apprenticeship, go on to higher education, or join the military.

Each group tour begins right on time, and we, unfortunately, will not be able to accommodate individuals who are too early or too late. Arrival no more than 15 minutes prior, please. When planning your route to arrive, please consider traffic and construction delays.

The majority of the tour will be outside. Astoria weather is often windy and wet; please, dress accordingly (all weather layers and walking type shoes).

Check-in will be at the security gate with proof or current auto insurance and a valid drivers license for the vehicle operator. Important: All guests and vehicles subject to search and screening with the use of a metal detecting wand.

EVALUATION OF STUDENT PROGRESS

Students practice behavioral expectations that support employability and social development for career readiness success. Students are evaluated every 60 days and receive an evaluation for academics, residential, and career technical training. Career Success Standards (CSS) are a set of behavioral expectations that support employability and social development for career success.

Workplace Relationships and Ethics— Ability to productively interact with co-workers and deal with problems and situations with honesty, integrity, and responsibility.

Communications— Ability to listen actively, follow directions, and communicate with others to solve problems and accomplish tasks.

Personal Growth and Development— Personal skills, attributes, and behaviors that foster confidence and drive for life-long growth.

Interpersonal Skills— Ability to get along with others and adjust to a variety of social and professional situations.

Information Management— Ability to interpret and evaluate data, organizes and maintains information, and uses technology to perform work.

Multicultural Awareness— Values diversity, practices cultural sensitivity, and able to work with people of different backgrounds and cultures.

Career and Personal Planning— Personal plan that outlines a step-by-step process for entering and advancing in a fulfilling career.

Independent Living— Capable of finding, managing, and utilizing the resources needed to maintain employment, satisfy physical and emotional needs, and lead a productive life as an independent adult.

Continuous Learning— Willing to continuously learn and grow, ability to assess personal strengths and areas for development, sets own learning goals, and can identify and access learning sources and opportunities.

Problem Solving/Critical Thinking— Ability to think and solve problems by seeking different points of view; readily uses science, technology, and mathematics as ways to think, gain, and share knowledge, problem solve and make decisions.

Compliance with Center Safety Standards— Students will leave Tongue Point JC valuing the importance of following workplace safety policies and having a safe and secure living and working environment.

Career Readiness— Students will learn and practice a set of behavioral expectations that supports employability and social development for career readiness success.

Attendance and Dress— Students will learn the importance of attendance and dressing appropriately in the workplace.

COMMUNITY SERVICE & COMMUNITY PARTNERS

Students need 5 hours of Community Service for Silver privilege level, 15 for Gold privilege and 20 for Platinum privilege level. The different privilege levels give the students special privileges on center and off center. Students get to choose where and when they volunteer in the community.  Some of our community service partners are:
