additional vocational training
KRIS SAULSBURY
Certification Trainer
My name is Kris Saulsbury and I have been working in the Job Corps Program for over 16 years now. Spending 12 years as a Landscaping Instructor before moving into a management role overseeing the Career Technical Training department for 4 years, and recently moving back to an instructor position as the Certification Trainer where I can really enjoy getting back to work with students on a more regular basis. Without question, being an instructor in the Job Corps program has been the most rewarding time of my working life.
My role as Certification Trainer is to teach Basic Vocational Safety courses per OSHA, Job Corps Program, and Center Operating Procedure requirements as well as facilitating CPR/1st Aid and ODOT Flagger certification training. Along with the mentioned safety programs I am a certified Trainer for Forklift, Aerial Boom Lift, Aerial Work Platform, Excavator and Skid Steer/Loader operations where we get many of our students to a Certified Operator status and as much useful practice as possible prior to entering their respective industries. The environment for learning equipment operation here at Tongue Point is as it should be with our young learners: Theory and knowledge of uses and hazards, emphasis on safety, taking practice and practical evaluation as slow as needed to gain the experience and confidence required to meet certification standards.
It is truly gratifying to watch successes begin here at Tongue Point.
The advice I give to every student has been the same all along… Be Humble, Be Kind, Work Hard.
Our students have many opportunities to attain industry standard certifications outside of those earned in their classroom and shop time.
Health Occupations and Seamanship students will go through CPR/1st Aid certification training. This certification is also available for other students when their particular career path calls for it, such as Union Apprenticeship placement.
Environmental Protection Agency/Oregon Health Authority accredited certification for Lead Paint Renovator is a vital certification for our Painters, Plasterers, Glazers, and Building Construction Technology students.
ODOT Traffic Control/Flagger certification allows them to step in on the work site and help when needed, or they may use it to earn income while between jobs or projects.
Theory, safety, and practical hands on training is essential to our equipment operator certifications. Following OSHA guidelines for training, we certify on forklift and aerial lift platforms. Some of our projects allow the students to gain experience on skid steer and excavator equipment.
