There are about 3,000 types of dragonflies. They are many colors such as green, blue and red. Dragonflies are unique because they can fly both forwards and backwards. Their eyes are huge and are made of many tiny parts, making them able to see all around themselves. These insects feed on other insects. They hunt by waiting for an insect to pass them and then lash out catching them in a pocket like thing located on their legs. They then eat the insect while still flying. Dragonflies live near water because that is where they are born and the females later lay their eggs. Once the female dragonflies eggs hatch the babies are called nymphs. The nymphs will shed up to 15 times in the water, however for their last molt they go onto land. After they shed this time they emerge as adults. Dragonflies predators include types of inphibians and birds.
