Yellow-bellied sapsuckers are a type of woodpecker. They feed by drilling holes in trees and sucking out the sap. They will also eat bugs that live in the bark of trees. Adults are about 8 inches long. These birds live in northwestern CT, but go south for the winter. You can tell males and females apart by the color of their throat patches. Males have red ones and females have white. Yellow-bellied sapsuckers nest up to 60 feet in the air. The females lay 5-6 days. During the months April and July the chicks hatch. After about 28 days the Yellow-bellied sapsucker's chicks go on their fist flight.
