Coyotes are not liked by many people because of their reputation as attackers, but really they only will attack if you go in their territory or near their young. They usually will try to stay away from humans, but habitat loss has made it harder to avoid contact. If you see a coyote walk away from them because you are probably in their territory. If you have a dog with you and you come in contact with a coyote the coyote will think that your dog is another coyote invading their territory. To be sure that your dog does not get hurt keep your dog on a leash when in or near a forest. Coyotes mostly eat small rodents, but occasionally they will eat bigger prey such as deer. They hunt during darker hours of the day. These animals also will howl at night to comminate to each other and warn other coyotes of their presence.
