Snowshoe hares are native to Connecticut. Their hair changes color in different colors in different seasons. For example during the warmer seasons their coat is brown , but during winter their fur turns white (a rare trait). Their hind feet work as snowshoes in the show (hence their name). Snowshoe hares are mostly nocturnal since they are mostly active during night hours. They can jump as far as 10-12 feet! Most snowshoe hares are larger than rabbits. The only big difference between rabbit and hare tracks is that the two dots on each track are in different places on the rabbit versus the hare. Unlike rabbits they sleep in brush and vegetation, not in a burrow. They do not hibernate in the winter. Some people eat snowshoe hare fried or in stew. They eat greens such as grass, clovers, and ferns, etc. Both male and female snowshoe hares are the same size. They have good hearing to sense predators, but their ears are actually smaller than other types of hare's ears.
